MT/E T.\AD`NDA'2015',Juiy\EN` IROiNMENITAL\Beach Ali nce MEMO.docx i1, b / i,f,1:111. 4,y ca.P !2! tt\\\\ ' July 10, 2015 The Honorable Carlos Gimenez Office of the Miami-Dade Mayor&County Commission Stephen P.Clark Center 111 NW 1st Street Miami, FL 33128 To The Honorable Mayor Gimenez: Miami-Dade County boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the entire world. The county attracts approximately 14.6 million tourists from both a national and international scale, over 50% of which chose to stay within oceanfront municipalities. The most notable feature of their stay is the chance to experience our beaches. Aside from being a major economic asset, our beaches also provide much needed protection against storm surge and the impacts of climate change. They are the first line of defense in protecting over$52 billion in property in our six coastal cities alone. As we enter another hurricane season and as we face the growing threat of sea level rise,it is imperative that we use all the resources possible to protect our coastlines and our communities. On July 9, 2015,the South Florida Mayor's Beach Alliance was formed to unite Miami-Dade County's coastal cities in ensuring that our region's most valuable asset thrives under our environment's changing conditions. The maintenance and management of our beaches requires a concerted effort by all of us.As such,we urge the County to implement a beach program with dedicated funding for beach restoration projects and to look for long-term solutions to keep sand on our beaches. Our cities are committed to ensuring that our tourism-based economies continue to thrive and that our communities continue to provide a high quality of life for our residents. Your commitment to preserve our beaches is imperative to helping us make that happen. Kindest Regards, { Mayor Philip Levine City of Miami Beach & 1 ?
