2015-29104 Reso RESOLUTION NO. 2015-29104 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, WAIVING ALL CITY OF MIAMI BEACH SPECIAL EVENT FEES AND CHARGES FOR ALL FUNDRAISING EVENTS BENEFITTING THE "DWAYNE HAVE A HEART FOUNDATION, INC." TAKING PLACE IN THE CITY. WHEREAS, on May 16, 2015, Dwayne Mitchell, the son of Miami Beach Police Detective Chris Mitchell and Officer Shantell Mitchell, suffered severe, life-threatening complications due to Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome and has been continuously hospitalized, or in 24-hour ICU facilities since said date, and will require specialized, residential rehabilitative care for the foreseeable future; and WHEREAS, the Mitchell Family has incurred, and will continue to incur, astronomical health care and related costs above and beyond the Mitchell Family's health insurance coverages; and WHEREAS, in order to support the Mitchell Family during this difficult time, and to assist with the financial burdens associated with the continuing and significant medical and related costs associated with Dwayne Mitchell's recovery, a variety of community fundraisers have been held, and future fundraising events will be held in the City of Miami Beach including, but not limited to, the "Dwayne Have a Heart Foundation, Inc." 5K/Run Walk and a golf tournament to be held on September 25, 2015 at the Normandy Shores Golf Course; and WHEREAS, due to the extraordinary nature of Dwayne Mitchell's condition, the Mayor and City Commission deem it in the best interest of the Miami Beach community to waive all City special event fees and charges associated with all fundraising events held in the City to benefit the "Dwayne Have a Heart Foundation, Inc." NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby waive all City special event fees and charges for all fundraising events benefitting the "Dwayne Have a Heart Foundation, Inc." taking place in the City of Miami Beach. The foundation is benefitting Dwayne Mitchell, son of Miami Beach Police officers Chris and Shantell Mitchell who has been diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White, an extremely rare, undiagnosed heart disease. Dwayne has missed his high school graduation and has been in • ICU fighting for a second chance at life. Although Dwayne has health insurance, the medical expenses for long-term treatment far exceed what the insurance will cover.
