NO. LTC# 413-2015 LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Mayor Phillip Levine and Members if the City I •mmission
FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager
DATE: October.23, 2015
SUBJECT: City of Miami Beach partnership wit New American Workforce
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to provide the Mayor and the City
Commission with an update on the status of our partnership with New American
Workforce, formerly known as The Bethlehem Project.
The City Commission passed a resolution on November 19, 2014 (#2014-28845)
approving an .agreement that permits New American Workforce and the National
Immigration Forum to assist eligible immigrant City of Miami Beach employees and their
9 9 9 Y
families with the citizenship process.
The City of Miami Beach launched this initiative with a written notice to all City
employees. In August three information sessions, open to all City employees and their
families, were. held. Yvette Thornton coordinated and facilitated the sessions; and
representatives from New American Workforce were in attendance to answer questions
and explain the process.
Two sessions were held on August 19, 2015, with a total of 15 attendees; and a third
session was held on August 25, 2015, with 16 attendees. Of the 31 employees and
family members in attendance, 13 employees have successfully completed their
application. Given the budgetary allocation for this initial phase of the program, the City
has been able to subsidize 100 percent of the application fee.
We will continue to support this initiative and provide updates.. The next orientation
session will take place February, 2016.
