NO. LTC# 484-2015
TO: Mayor Philip Levine and Members of ' e City Co ission
FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager 40
DATE: December 17, 2015
SUBJECT: Miami Beach Police Depart ent Overtime Driving-Under-The-
Influence (DUI) Enforcement Pr•gram.
The Miami Beach Police Department (MBPD) is pleased to announce that we
have been awarded a $100,000 grant, overseen and administered by the Florida
Department of Transportation, aimed specifically at DUI enforcement. The grant
is particularly significant, as Miami Beach ranks sixth in driver-impaired crashes
for Floridian cities with a population of 75,000 and over (a total of 31 cities) -
despite it having by far the smallest land mass (7.4 square miles).
The enforcement program will include publicized sobriety checkpoints, publicized
saturation patrols, and mass media campaigns. In each saturation patrol, the
MBPD will employ one sergeant and at least six police officers on overtime for
the purpose of enforcing traffic laws and pursuing impaired drivers. The
checkpoint operations will involve one lieutenant (the checkpoint commander),
one or two sergeants, fifteen police officers, one detention officer and one public
safety specialist.
The MBPD, with assistance from the Public Information Office, will conduct a
mass media campaign through various social media outlets to publicize
enforcement operations and help spread the message of the `Drive Sober or Get
Pulled Over' campaign.
The full objectives and targets of the program are included in Appendix A.
Please join me in supporting the MBPD in this important public safety endeavor.
