OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
NO. LTC # 452-2016 LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Mayor Philip Levine and Member.. of the City J mmission
FROM: Jimmy Morales, City Manager i
DATE: October 25, 2016
SUBJECT: Recycling Services in the City s, Miami Beach
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to provide you with the status of the City's
recycling efforts and to advise you of the initiatives that are forthcoming. In an effort to
standardize the disposal process and ensure that trash/recyclables are properly
removed from the City's waste stream, the Public Works Department and the
Environment and Sustainability Department are happy to announce the services offered
to its residents and employees.
Electronic Recycling
Progressive Waste Services (PWS)is required per their negotiated contract, to provide
free electronic waste recycling to residents. PWS is required to use one of two
accredited certification standards recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA): the Responsible Recycling ("R2") Standard for Electronics Recyclers and the e-
Stewards® Standard for Responsible Recycling and Reuse of Electronic Equipment ("e-
Stewards®"). Both of these programs require the entities managing used electronics to
use best management practices which minimizes exposure to human health or the
environment.
Location Dates/Times Accepted Items

2800 Meridian Avenue 7:00 AM — 5:00 PM printers, televisions, and

Textile Recycling
Old clothing and textiles represent approximately 13 million pounds of material going to
landfills. In order to reduce this rate, the city has set up four free textile recycling areas.
PWS is offering textile recycling services at the Green Waste Facility and Charity
Recycling has placed textile recycling bins at three drop off points throughout the City for
unwanted clothing, shoes, and household items. Items that are dropped off within the
bins are either donated or resold by thrift stores. Any textiles that are damaged will be
repurposed into materials such as cleaning rags and insulation. Additionally, the City will
receive $0.10 per pound of textiles that are recycled. The revenue from this program will
be allocated to further support and promote sustainable initiatives throughout the City.
