SUBJECT: National Flood Insurance Pr.gram (NFIP) Class 6 Community Rating for the City
of Miami Beach
I am pleased to provide this as an update on the City's current community rating for the NFIP
Community Rating System. The activities of the Community Rating System reduce flood risk
and ultimately reduce the cost of flood insurance- important for our economic resilience.
Verisk Insurance Solutions ISO on behalf of FEMA has reviewed and approved the City of Miami
Beach's Community Rating System (CRS) recertification process for 2016. This is an annual
summary recertification that validates that the City of Miami Beach remains in good standing with
a Class 6 rating with CRS of the National Flood Insurance Program for the upcoming year. As a
result, the City's residents and businesses will continue to earn up to a 20% discount on their
flood insurance premiums. Approximately 46,000 flood insurance policy holders in Miami Beach
will be saving over $5.7 million dollars annually.
Verisk Insurance Solutions Insurance Service Office (ISO) is commissioned by FEMA to evaluate
our currency with Floodplain Management standards. City of Miami Beach CRS recertification
activities consist of: Elevation and Flood Proofing certificates, Flood Map and Flood Protection
Information, Outreach Projects, Flood . Protection Assistance, Open Space Preservation,
Floodplain Management Planning, Flood Data and Drainage System Maintenance, Flood
Warning Program, Drainage System and Flood Data Maintenance.
While this was a summary review for the annual cycle, staff across multiple departments is
assisting in new initiatives essential for next year's in-depth five-year cycle verification visit. The
Building Department and its Floodplain Management section will continue to work diligently to
ensure these savings continue from year to year. Please feel free to contact me if you have any
questions or concerns.
