SUBJECT:
Miami Tunnel 2 Towers 5K — Traffic Impact
This Letter to Commission (LTC) is to provide you with information regarding the Miami
Tunnel 2 Tower 5k scheduled for Sunday, September 18, 2016. The City of Miami and
Miami—Dade County are hosting a 5K run/ walk on Sunday evening, September 18,
2016 at 7:00 PM, that will see significant traffic impacts to westbound travel along the
MacArthur Causeway. .
The Miami Tunnel 2 Towers 5K is a race designed to honor the Police and Firefighters
lost in the September 11 World Trade Center attack. The race will principally take place
in the PortMiami tunnel, with participants using the outbound tunnel that leads to
westbound 1-395. To enter the tunnel, participants will use the Bayshore Drive
(Biscayne Boulevard) off-ramp and westbound MacArthur Causeway. To safely
accommodate the participants, the race organizers are closing all of westbound
MacArthur Causeway from Alton Road from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. This extended time is
needed to install and remove the closure cones and barricades. Local westbound
access will be provided to residents of Fisher, Palm, Star and Hibiscus Islands, as well
as Terminal Island users. The event coordinators as well as City of Miami Police and
Fire are working with City of Miami Beach Police and Fire. The City of Miami Beach's
Transportation Department is taking the lead in ensuring all City of Miami Beach
Maintenance of Traffic needs are met. Digital Message Signs along the City's principal
routes will be posted at least one-week in advance of the event to alert drivers of the
westbound closure on the MacArthur Causeway during the marathon. Additionally, a
traffic alert will be disseminated community-wide in advance of the event.
As there are no event elements taking place in the City of Miami Beach, the City of
Miami Beach will not issue a special event permit. Because of this, the event producer is
not required to seek Miami Beach Commission approval for the requested use.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
