SUBJECT: PARKS AND RECREATION - READ ONMIGO
The purpose of this LTC is to notify the Mayor and City Commission of the recent
partnership between the parks and Recreation Department and Read Conmigo to
promote bilingual literacy to children and families on Miami Beach. Read Conmigo
provides parents and students free bilingual children's books in English and Spanish as
well as online resources for children in Preschool to 5th grade.
Reading is the most important skill a child must acquire to succeed in school and
learning a second language fosters social, economic and cognitive benefits. Read
Conmigo has donated bookshelves stocked with bilingual books to Flamingo Park, the
Scott Rakow Youth Center and North Shore Park and Youth Center. These books are
available for FREE for anyone who visits one of these facilities. The Parks and
Recreation Department is committed to improving literacy and celebrating the diversity
that makes our community so great.
