Edition, FRPA Journal -Facilities Showcase Issue
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (L TC) is to inform you of our recent success in having
the Flamingo Park Memorial Football Field and Track be recognized as a showcase facility in the
2014 Winter Edition of the Florida Recreation and Park Association (FRPA) Journal. Entry
submissions began this past summer, and after a review by a panel of judges from the many
entries from all over the state, the City of Miami Beach Flamingo Park Memorial Football Field
and Track was given a feature spotlight. The feature includes architectural, design, amenity,
programming and community benefit information, as well as a photo spread.
As stated in the magazine, the facility showcase "highlights outstanding facilities built around the
state by agencies creating outstanding public spaces". We are proud to have received this
special recognition and are committed to providing our Miami Beach residents and guests with
quality recreational facilities that focus on the health, enjoyment and well-being of people of all
ages and abilities. Should you have additional questions, please contact John Rebar at (305)

Lee County Parks & Recreation built the North Fort Myers
Recreation Center to replace a smaller building, providing this
area with some much-needed additional recreation space. The
facility serves as a location for Lee Memorial Hospital's SHARE Club
Senior program, which offers recreational, wellness and educational
programs for adults over 50. In addition, the University of Florida
Extension Services hosts many programs at the facility, and the
North Fort Myers Rotary Club has provided free concerts there as
well as free memberships to the center for area youths.
The new recreation center is a crown jewel in the community
park. It features multipurpose rooms for meetings and various pro-
grams, and offers a fitness center, a game room and a gymnasium
with multipurpose basketball and volleyball courts built to high-level
traveling tournament standards. The concrete, masonry and steel
structure can serve as a Lee County emergency shelter as well.
Gl -The new recreation center complements the other
amenities of North Fort Myers Community Park, which
include baseball and football fields, shuffleboards courts,
a playground, a pavilion and a disc golf course.
Funding for construction of the North Fort Myers Recreation
Center came from impact fees for new construction. Since the
facility opened in October 2013 it has quickly become the most
used recreation building in the county.
G2 -Multipurpose rooms like this one can be used for
a variety of programming, including offerings from
the University of Florida extension services and Lee
Memorial's SHARE Club senior program.
G3 -The 33,000 square foot facility is constructed of
concrete, masonry and steel so that it can serve as an
emergency shelter for Lee County residents.

Flamingo Park Memorial Football Field and Track
$2.4 million
26,000 sq. ft.
Engineer Stantec Consulting Services Inc., Coral Gables
Contractor CSR Heavy Construction, Deerfield Beach
After several years of heavy use, the Flamingo Park Memorial Football Field and Track
was in poor condition. It suffered from cracked and uneven track lanes, dips and holes
on the grass field, drainage problems, an old lighting system and inaccessibility issues.
With
$2.4 million in renovations, the facility field and track have become world-class
facilities. Funding for the improvements came from resort and development taxes and
parks and recreation bonds.
The Parks and Recreation Department collaborated with area residents, neighborhood
organizations and other City departments during the planning and renovation process.
The new facility, opened in September 2013, features a renovated bleacher building that
meets ADA standards. Other changes include updated seating, a press box with a state-
of-the-art public address system, restrooms and a concession stand. The installation of
artificial turf and field drainage has allowed the field to accommodate both football and
soccer games, and the surface of the eight-lane running track can withstand bicycles
and rollerblades. There is also an updated sports lighting system.
Players from recreational programs, high schools, civic leagues and charitable teams
keep the field and track busy 12 months a year.
Hl -Flamingo Park Memorial Football Field and
Track has become a world-class facility thanks
to a S2.4 million renovation.
H2 -A new artificial turf surface and improved
field drainage has enabled the field to handle
both football and soccer games.
H3 -Thanks to the resilient surface, runners,
bicyclists and rollerbladers can all use the new
eight-lane track.
