BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS
The Sanford L. Ziff Jewish Museum is an important cultural institution of the City of Miami Betel ,
which, during its short existence, has provided substantial, continuing benefits to our citizens an 1
visitors and has enriched the cultural life of our community. In the past, the City has provided to th ~
Museum assistance in the form of a loan for $500,000, made in payments between Novembn L,
1994 and May 2, 1995, which loan is in the process of being repaid, as well as a grant in the amour t
of$115,000 in October, 1995.
Because the Jewish Museum has not been in existence for two full years, the Museum is not eligibl ~
for operating funding assistance from the State of Florida. The proposed grant will take the MUSI~ur 1
into the beginning of its third year of existence. In addition, the Museum has been advised the t
future funding requests from the City must be handled by the newly created Miami Beach CultJf< I
Arts Council.
Funding the Museum to assist it in entering its third year of operations will enhance a valuable an 1
important cultural institution in the City of Miami Beach. Funds will be available from unallocate 1
collections of resort taxes.
CONCLUSION
Adoption of the Resolution is in the best interest of the City of Miami Beach and is consistent wit 1
the City's continuing efforts to promote the cultural arts in our community.
