97-22322 RESO RESOLUTION NO. 97-22322 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING AND APPROPRIATING A GRANT IN THE SUM OF $150,000, TO BE FUNDED FROM UNALLOCA TED RESORT TAX COLLECTIONS, TO THE SANFORD L. ZIFF JEWISH MUSEUM OF FLORIDA FOR THE CONTINUED OPERATION OF SAME. WHEREAS, the Sanford L. Ziff Jewish Museum, located at 301 Washin~to' Avenue, is an important cultural institution of the City of Miami Beach; and WHEREAS, the Jewish Museum has provided substantial continuing benefits to th~ citizens of and visitors to the City and has enriched the cultural life of our community; an j WHEREAS, as the Jewish Museum has been operating for under two years, it is st II not eligible for State Operating Funding Assistance, and has therefore requested that th ~ City assist it with a proposed grant, in the amount of $150,000, to be funded fmn unallocated Resort Tax Collections, and to assist the Museum through its second and 'int) its third year of operations. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSI'ON OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, approving and appropriating a grant in th.~ sum of $150,000, to be funded from unallocated Resort Tax Collections, to the Sanford l. ZIFF JEWISH MUSEUM OF FLORIDA, WITH FUNDING TO COME FROM UNALLOCATED RESOR1- T AX COLLECTIONS TO: SUBJECT: RECOMMENDATION Approve the Resolution. BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS The Sanford L. Ziff Jewish Museum is an important cultural institution of the City of Miami Betel , which, during its short existence, has provided substantial, continuing benefits to our citizens an 1 visitors and has enriched the cultural life of our community. In the past, the City has provided to th ~ Museum assistance in the form of a loan for $500,000, made in payments between Novembn L, 1994 and May 2, 1995, which loan is in the process of being repaid, as well as a grant in the amour t of$115,000 in October, 1995. Because the Jewish Museum has not been in existence for two full years, the Museum is not eligibl ~ for operating funding assistance from the State of Florida. The proposed grant will take the MUSI~ur 1 into the beginning of its third year of existence. In addition, the Museum has been advised the t future funding requests from the City must be handled by the newly created Miami Beach CultJf< I Arts Council. Funding the Museum to assist it in entering its third year of operations will enhance a valuable an 1 important cultural institution in the City of Miami Beach. Funds will be available from unallocate 1 collections of resort taxes.
