The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to remind you that April is Earth Month and to
provide you with a calendar of the City's month-long celebrations. The City will be hosting multiple
events across the city and county to educate our residents, visitors and staff regarding the beauty
of our natural resources and the importance of protecting our environment.
• Saturday, April 1 — Sea Turtle Season
Sea turtle season officially begins on April 1 and will run until October 31. Staff will
continue education and outreach efforts with residents, businesses, and visitors in order
to promote awareness on the importance of not disturbing sea turtles and minimizing
Tight that is visible from the beach.
• Sunday, April 2 — Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off & Paper Shredding
Our bi-annual household hazardous waste collection and paper shredding event will
take place at the parking lot on 40 Street and Chase Avenue from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.
During the event, residents can drop off old chemicals, paints, and electronics for
proper disposal, as well as old documents for secure paper shredding. This will help
keep hazardous waste out of our landfills and our waterways.
• Saturday, April 8 — Household Plant Giveaway at Spring Eggstravaganza
Residents can pick-up a free native household plant at the City's annual Spring
Eggstravaganza. The event, which will be held at the North Shore Park and Youth
Center from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, will also feature arts and crafts, pictures with
bunnies, carnival rides, refreshments, and egg hunts for children aged 10 and younger.
• Tuesday, April 11 — City Staff Stormwater Training
The Environment and Sustainability Department will be training field employees on how
to prevent, identify, and report stormwater violations. This staff training will improve
compliance with the City's National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit,
protect the integrity of our stormwater infrastructure, and improve water quality.
• Monday, April 17 and Tuesday, April 18 — City Staff ParkSmart Training
The Parking Department will be hosting a ParkSmart training to educate employees on
the ParkSmart program and how it can be used to employ and implement green
building practices in parking projects.

• Thursday, April 19 — Sustainable Procurement
The Procurement Department and the Environment and Sustainability Department will
be collaborating with Office Depot on hosting two training sessions for sustainable
procurement. The trainings are scheduled for April 19 and will be held within the
Procurement conference room from 9:00 am - 10:30 am and 11:00 am - 12:30 pm.
• Thursday, April 20 — County -wide Environmental Outreach
The City will be attending two environmental events in Miami -Dade County: 1) the
Miami Beach Senior High Eco Fair, and 2) the University of Miami Green Fair. The
City's participation at these events will allow staff to share our community's environment
and sustainability initiatives with a new audience.
• Friday, April 21 — Earth Day at Miami Beach Botanical Gardens
The Environment and Sustainability Department will join local environmental
organizations at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden's Earth Day celebrations to provide
information on the City's environment and sustainability initiatives. Additionally, City
staff will participate in a Q&A session following the evening's feature film National
Geographic's Before the Flood. The event runs from 5:00 pm — 10:00 pm.
• Saturday, April 22 — Baynanza Volunteer Clean -Up
Miami -Dade County will be engaging thousands of community volunteers throughout
Miami -Dade County in cleaning approximately 22 locations along Biscayne Bay's
shorelines and islands, including Maurice Gibb Park and Flagler Memorial Island
(Monument Island), as part of the 35th annual Baynanza. The event will go on from 9:00
am to 12:00 pm. Volunteers can register by following the link below.

• Friday, April 28 — Arbor Day Tree Planting Ceremony & Proclamation
Miami Beach will celebrate Arbor Day with a tree planting ceremony and proclamation in
Sunset Harbour that will bring attention to the importance of the City's urban forest and
will re -qualify the City to receive the Tree City USA designation. The City has held this
designation for 11 years, which is a testament to the efforts of our community's hard
work to protect our vital tree canopy. The event will run from at 10:00 a.m. — 11:00 a.m.
• Sunday, April 30 — Alternative Transportation Education at Ciclovia
The Environment and Sustainability Department returns to Ciclovia, this month to
provide residents with information on how alternative transportation contributes
toward mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and to provide information on the
various alternative transportation options in our community. The event will run from
8:00 am to 1:00 pm.
