Subject: Dual Enrollment Status Miami Bea. Senior High School and Nautilus Middle School
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to provide information on the status of our
partnership with Miami -Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS), Florida International University,
and Miami Dade College to increase dual enrollment courses at Miami Beach Senior High
School and Nautilus Middle School.
The interest and success of students at our high school in dual enrollment classes has resulted
in a 83 percent increase in the number of courses from the 2015 -16 to 2016 -17 school years.
The chart below provides information on the number of course and class sections available to
students following the implementation of the partnership in Fall 2014, as well as the financial
savings to Miami Beach families for those children choosing to enroll in Dual Enrollment classes
offered at Miami Beach public schools funded by the city. Additionally, these classes support
class size reduction efforts.

Funding to support and expand the partnership in the 2016 -17 school years includes an
estimated City contribution of $36,720 for instructor salaries and MDCPS contribution of
$38,640 for textbooks. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2016/17, the City's expenditures to support and
enhance educational programming in Miami Beach public schools amount to approximately
$354,000, offset by approximately $100,000 in dedicated funding through the Education
Compact Fund and contributions and $119,000 in General Fund support. These efforts have
been supported by drawing of prior year available balances in the Education Compact Fund, an
approach that is not sustainable for the long term.
The dual enrollment program at Miami Beach Senior High School and Nautilus Middle School
allows eligible students to enroll in a college course and high school class simultaneously. The
credits the students earn are used toward both a high school diploma and are acceptable
towards a college Associate or Bachelor degree, or technical certificate. The benefits of offering
dual enrollment courses to high school students include:
• Saves students and parents money, as dual enrollment students are exempt from paying
application, registration, tuition, laboratory, and special fees if the classes taken are
being used toward high school graduation
• Enriches the course opportunities for outstanding high school students
• Shortens the time to attain a college degree
• Provides students with college credit that is transferable to a college or university
• Allows grades earned to become part of the students' permanent transcripts
Dual enrollment course offerings include, but are not limited to, the following for the 2016 -17
and 2017 -18 school years:
• Introduction to Sociology
• Survey of British Literature I & II
• College Algebra
• Social Problems
• Introduction to Entrepreneurship
• Calculus 1
• Pre- Calculus
• Introduction to Education
• Introduction to Literature
• Teaching Diverse Populations
• American Government
• Criminal Justice
• Music Appreciation
• Introduction to Computer Technology and Applications
• Social Environment
We will continue to support our strategic outcome to achieve K -12 public school excellence
through our Education Compact. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Dear Sirs and Madams,
am writing on behalf of the MBSH PTSA to express our gratitude for the funds you have
made available for dual enrollment in partnership with FIU and MDC. Through your efforts
all students now have access and equal opportunity to complete college courses. Rest

consistent support. Thanks to you, dual enrollment offerings have been expanded from
zero courses two.years ago to thirteen courses in 2017, Furthermore, you have enabled
us to expand dual enrollment to 9th and 10th graders at Miami Beach Senior High, and to
8th graders at Nautilus Middle School.
With all of the demands placed upon you by constituents, administration and local
government in general, we deem it necessary to pause and extend our sincere
appreciation to you for remembering the importance of the dual enrollment program for
our children. On behalf of the MBSH PTSA, 1 implore you to continue to support and sustain
the students at Miami Beach Senior High School and all students on Miami Beach. Your
