SUBJECT: MIAMI BEACH RECOGNIZED AS MOST BICYCLE - FRIENDLY CITY IN SOUTH
FLORIDA
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to announce the Silver level award to Miami
Beach today from the League of American Bicyclists through their Bicycle Friendly Community
program, officially making Miami Beach the most bicycle friendly community in South Florida.
The League's report noted high ridership scores, an excellent rating on bicycle education in
schools, meritorious safety measures and reported a low number of crashes and fatalities.
Through this award, the city is now the only Silver level bicycle- friendly community in Miami -
Dade County. Municipalities recognized as a bronze level include Key Biscayne, City of Miami,
City of Weston, Broward County, Boca Raton, among others.
Following the results of a 2016 biennial survey to residents, the city has been dedicated to
building out a planned bicycle network as part of its bicycle pedestrian master plan, set to be
complete by 2035. Recently, the city implemented a significant amount of the proposed 23 miles
of protected bicycle lanes. Miami Beach has also initiated a campaign to educate cyclists and
automobile drivers on proper safety behaviors.
The League of American Bicyclists is a national non - profit organization that promotes cycling as
a fun and healthy transportation alternative through advocacy and education.
