OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
NO. LTC # 269.2017
LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Mayor Philip Levine and Members of jf e City Co 'mission
FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager
DATE: May 18, 2017
SUBJECT: AFTERSCHOOL PROFESSIONALS APPRECIATION WEEK RECOGNITION
The purpose of this LTC is to notify the Mayor and City Commission of the recent
recognition received by the Parks and Recreation Department's Afterschool program at
North Shore Park from The Children's Trust in honor of Afterschool Professionals
Appreciation Week.
Every April, the National Afterschool Association recognizes those who work with youth
during out -of- school hours. Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week is a joint effort
of community partners, afterschool programs, youth and child care workers and
individuals who have committed to declaring the last full week of April as a time to
recognize and appreciate those who work with youth during out -of- school hours. The
week is marked by celebrations and public relations efforts to encourage people to thank
afterschool professionals who make a difference in the lives of young people in their
communities.
An estimated 10.2 million children participate in afterschool programs each year across
the United States. Today, afterschool programs are viewed as much more than just
childcare. They are widely credited as the way to provide enhanced education in STEM,
Literacy, The Arts, Social Emotional Learning, Health & Wellness, and more.
The Parks and Recreation Department is proud to have received this honor and to be
able to provide excellent afterschool programming throughout our City.
