SUBJECT: PARKS AND RECREATION — M c KIDS SCOOP NEWSLETTER
LETTER TO COMMISSION
The purpose of this LTC is to notify the Mayor and City Commission of the exciting new
quarterly newsletter written by the Parks and Recreation After School and Teen Club
program participants at our various sites. These kids have a "nose for news" as proven
in the first edition of MB Kids Scoop where our journalists tackled issues such as
keeping our beaches clean as well as the importance of healthy eating and staying
active. Shailee (North Shore Park's version of "Dear Abby ") offered up some meaningful
advice while we got to know Scott Rakow's own Coach Aron.
We would like to thank the Office of Communications who worked with our columnists to
organize their ideas and to help with the graphic design. Keep an eye out for future
editions of MB Kids Scoop as we feature columns, stories and upcoming events that will
help keep parents and children up to date on the latest happenings at #MBParks.
Should you have additional questions, please contact Cindy Casanova at (305) 673-
7730.

Common Threads is a program that
teaches kids how to cook in a healthier
way. The program takes place at Scott
Rakow, Flamingo and North Shore
Park. Kids ages 5 to 11 participate in
the program. The Common Threads
class begins with a lesson on why it is
important to eat healthy and the recipe
they will be creating. Then they create
magic, by bringing the recipe to life.
Last but not least, tasting. The kids get
to eat their creations.
Eva Martinez is a camper at Scott
Rakow who has been participating in

Martinez also lets us
know she has learned
to make new and
easy recipes because

This class has not only
influenced Martinez,

program by teaching
them a healthy way
of eating.

Let's Keep Our
Beach Clean!
By Janae Garcia, NSP
North Shore Park
is helping out the
community by cleaning
the beach every
Wednesday. The
campers here in North
Shore Park spend 1
hour and 30 minutes
of their time to clean
up the seashore and
the sand.
I never realized how
much people pollute
the beach until we
started this clean up.
We have found many
things including water
bottles, beer caps,
wrappers and much
more. The beach is too
beautiful to be covered
in trashed.
After this learning
experience, I will
definitely be a lot
cleaner next time I
go to the beach! We
should care more
about our paradise.
Always keep in mind
that the beach is part
of home, it's our job to
keep our home clean!

What motivated you to work
at Scott Rakow?
As a child growing up my coaches
made after school and summer camp
the best experience ever.
How much do you enjoy
working at Scott Rakow?
I really enjoy working here because
of the colorful personalities from kids
to coaches.
How much do you enjoy
working with children?
I love it! These kids grow up
differently than the older
generation that we are. It's pretty
cool to teach these kids something
for the first time.
Who was your favorite
coach as a child?
I had many coaches, but one coach
that sticks out was my flag football
coach, Devaughn.
As a child what was
your dream?
I always looked at myself making it
to the NBA or NFL because of my
love for sports.
What is your favorite food?
My favorite food is Venezuelan food
tequenos, empanadas, cachitos...

Hi, I'm Khali, I am a nine year
old and I will be talking about the
sports we play at Flamingo Park.
Some of the sports we play here
are made up which makes them
more creative.
These games help us get along.
Some of the games we play
are tag, soccer, basketball and
many more. We also play 3 -step,
dodgeball, cat and mouse
and football.
Playing sports is important they
make you faster, stronger and it
helps you lose weight. We do
outdoor activities in the playground,
play tennis once in a while when
it's sunny, and we have lots of fun.
Soccer is fun too; we play it mostly
in the football field.
Last but not least football! We bring
a football to the playground to play
with some friends. Anyway, hope to
see you at Flamingo!

I am 9 years old and my problem is that my
brother fights with me and I want it to stop.
I want him to stop fighting me and be nice to me.
I even try fighting back, but it still doesn't work.
What do I do?
First try to play together or talk about it. Tell him
you don't want to fight him. Also, you should
never fight back. That just makes it worse.
Sincerely, Shailee

Okay, I have this friend, we are always
fighting. For example, when my other friends
and I are playing tag she gets hurt she makes
a big deal about it. What should I do?
If she is hurt you should care, don't fight with
her. She did just get hurt. There are a few
things you could do. Ask her if she is okay.
Help her up. Ask her if she wants anyone to
help her. Don't fight with your friends.
Sincerely, Shailee

My friends are always ignoring me and leaving me behind. Whenever I
want to talk to my BFF my other friends push me out the way and talk to
my BFF instead. You tell me what should I do?
To begin with, if they are your friends they won't push you out the way.
You should try talking to them and about the problem you are having. You
should also ask your BFF why she is allowing them to push you out the
way. Let your BFF know your feelings are Shailee

My problem is that I can't behave at
home with my sister. She is too rude!
You should not mess around with your
sister. If you can't solve your problem,
you should leave her alone. By leaving
her alone you won't fight. Most
importantly, try being nicer to her!
Sincerely, Shailee

On May 26 & 27, an audience of
over 500 people at Nautilus Middle
School had the opportunity to choose
the fate of Hope Reiley.
As this courtroom drama unravels,
there was more to know about Hope
as we place humanity under a
magnifying glass.
"I was inspired to write this play
after an encounter I had with
three homeless teens outside of
our center," said director Willie
Priegues.
This play was an interactive
experience, the first of a kind for
the CMB players. We allowed
the audience via a mobile App to
choose weather Hope is innocent
or guilty changing the outcome to
the play. In addition, the audience
had a chance to use a snapchat
geofilter and other interactive
surprises. IMPOSSIBLE was
written and directed by William
Priegues and co- directed by

I'm looking forward to
going to summer camp
at Flamingo Park. I enjoy
seeing my friends, the
fieldtrips, swimming,
playground, ice skating
and playing games.
We go to many fun
places like Monster mini
golf, the Wow Factory,
the movies and more.
I love all my coaches
because they are fun and
friendly. We sing, dance
and play games that
teach me to be patient
and how to work as
a group.
I hope this coming
summer will be even
more fun...and I hope to
see you there!

In March, I went on a camping trip with Teen Club,
to Arcadia, FL. It was my first time camping, and it
was a memorable experience. The trip started with a
3 to 4 hour bus ride, thank God I could sleep through
the excessive talking. Once we arrived, we had
sandwiches to give us energy for what was to come.
We got on another bus to get to the canoes, and
that's when the camping experience really started.
I loved how it was a bit of a workout, but still fun.
Once we arrived to the camp site and waited for the
slow pokes, some teens started a football game since
the tents were already set up for us, so we had real
lunch. Some of us walked around the camp site to
scope it out, and walked some trails. After that walk
in the hot sun, we all agreed it was time for swim. The
water was freezing, so it took some time for everyone
to get in. Suddenly, the dinner bell...tacos, mmm!
As it began to get dark everyone sat around the
camp fire. Then, it was my favorite part of the trip
S'mores, scary stories, and acting games. This is
what I was really expecting from a camping trip.
In the morning, it was surprisingly cold for being
Florida. For breakfast we ate french toast sticks, eggs
and sausage. Although we didn't set up the tents,
we helped with the breakdown, a real camping
experience. Then hopped back into our canoes for
an hour long paddle back, and coach Shamika and
I tipped over into the freezing water. Finally, we had
to head back, we made a quick stop to eat, then
continued our journey homeward bound.
I can definitely say I'm excited for next year! dlIW
