RESOLUTION NO. 13746
WHEREAS, the United States of America is the owner
of that certain tract of land lying at the southern extremity
of the City of Miami Beach, north of and adjacent to Government
Cut, and commonly known as the Government Reservation; said
tract of land being under the primary jurisdiction of the
Department of the Army, Corps of Engineers ; and
WHEREAS, the United States of America has for a
long period of time leased to the City of Miami Beach a portion
of approximately 4.89 acres of said Government Reservation for
use as a public park, recreational and other municipal purposes ;
and
WHEREAS, Government use of the said Government Reserva-
tion is minimal and negligible; end
WHEREAS, the need by the City of Miami Beach for said
entire tract of land is pressing, urgent, and imperative to meet
the ever-increasing needs of the public ; and
WHEREAS, it would be in the best interests of the
United States Government, the State of Florida, the County of
Dade, and the City of Miami Beach, and its residents and inhabi-
tants, that the United States of America should convey title to
said Government Reservation, in its entirety, without cost to
the City so that the said entire tract of land may be devoted
to the best interests of the people of the City, the County, the
State, and the Nation, for public park, recreational and other
appropriate related municipal uses ;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the United States of
America, by and through the Department of the Army, Corps of
Engineers, be and it is hereby formally requested to take steps
forthwith for the conveyance of said Government Reservation to
the City of Miami Beach, without cost, so that the City of Miami
Beach may devote and utilize the same to its maximum potential
for public park, recreational and related municipal purposes ;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution
be transmitted to the President of the United States, the
Secretary of Defense, the United States Senators representing
the State of Florida, and to all Congressmen in the House of
Representatives at Washington, D. C. representing the State of
Florida.
