LTC 376-2017 Beachfront Concession Waste ReductionOFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
NO. LTC# 376-2017
LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO:
FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager
DATE: July 24, 2017
SUBJECT: Beachfront Concession Waste
The purpose of this L TC is to inform the Mayor and the City Commission that our Beach
Maintenance Division, the Environmental and Sustainability Committee, the Asset
Management Division of TCED, beachfront concessionaires, and several Hotel
Managers have begun working together to bring about a dramatic reduction of trash and
litter on our beach.
While the use of recyclable and biodegradable items is desirable and certainly has
many benefits, these items when left on our beach are still trash. They still need to be
collected and properly disposed of at an ever increasing cost. A good deal of these
items still adds to our landfills and our carbon footprint.
The use of "Reusable" items for food and beverage (F&B) beachfront service will benefit
us all. Reusable items are already used to some extent at many Hotels. Making it a
requirement for all F&B service on the beach will greatly reduce the volume of trash
being generated and needing to be collected.
Within one month following this group first meeting, SLS Hotel on South Beach, which
was already using 75% reusable F&B items in their beach service, has gone to 100%
reusable. It is in this direction that we want to see all F&B services provided in the future
on Miami Beach.
