LTC # 399-2017 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Philip Levine and Members of the City Commission DATE: August 4, 2017 SUBJECT: Flamingo Park Tree Damaged by Tuesday's Storm The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to advise the Mayor and City Commission on the damage caused by Tuesday's storm to a mature Ficus benjamina tree in Flamingo Park and the efforts to restore the canopy coverage it provided within the park. On August 3, 2017, as part of their post-storm tree assessment, the city's Urban Forestry staff identified a ficus tree in Flamingo Park whose shallow root system failed during the storm and toppled over. Upon further investigation, the tree was observed to have suffered extensive damage to its root system, as well as to scaffolding branches throughout its canopy. As such, the tree has been effectively destroyed and deemed an immanent hazard. At this time, the Parks and Recreation Department has secured the surrounding area and is scheduling its removal. In an effort to restore the canopy lost with this tree, the Parks and Recreations Department will work collaboratively with the Urban Forestry Division staff on planting seven Florida Friendly Category 1 trees within the park. ~ Photo 1 -Toppled Ficus benjamina tree Photo 2 -Tree damage Should you have any questions, please contact the city's Urban Forester, Omar Leon, at 305- 673-7722 . ...{tM SMT/MKW/OJL
