FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager
DATE: September 13, 2017
SUBJECT A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, ACCEPTING AND APPROVING THE.
RECOMMENDATION OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD /COMMUNITY AFFAIRS
COMMITTEE TO AUTHORIZE THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO UTILIZE THE
ATTACHED LOGO FOR MUNICIPAL PURPOSES ONLY.
RECOMMENDATION
Accept the recommendation from the July 28, 2017 Neighborhood and Community Affairs Committee.
ANALYSIS
In December 2016, the Administration presented three proposed City logos for use in both licensing
and merchandising as well as municipal to the Mayor and City Commission for discussion, and the
Mayor and City Commission directed the Administration to seek external input and develop a
recommendation. The Mayor and City Commission also recommended bifurcating the municipal logo
and the licensing and merchandising logo and referred the discussion pertaining to the municipal logo
to the Neighborhoods and Community Affairs Committee.
Staff met with the Art in Public Places committee, conducted a Facebook poll, presented to the VCA,
talked with our trademark attorney, discussed likelihood of success with our consultant and most
recently attended the International Licensing Show in Las Vegas to meet with potential licensing
partners. The International Licensing Show is the largest licensing show in the world and brings
together all of the major licensing and branding companies each year.
Each of these conversations provided staff with invaluable feedback and suggestions. Overall, the
feedback pertaining to the municipal logo was overwhelmingly clear that the choice for the municipal
logo would be to keep the current logo with an added update.
On July 28, 2017 staff presented the attached updated municipal logos to the Neighborhoods and
Community Affairs Committee for recommendation. While logo number 7 was supported by some in
the meeting, the majority supported keeping the original logo and simply making the lines at the
bottom wavy.
Staff incorporated suggestions pertaining to the logo, and have attached final logo for your approval.
