COMMISSION MEMORANDUM NO. ~ 15 - 9L
TO:
Mayor Seymour Gelber and
Members of the City Commission
DATE: October 9, 1996
SUBJECT:
Jose Garcia-Pedrosa
City Manager
FROM:
F THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MI BEACH AUTHORIZING THE CITY TO PAY THE
MIAMI BEACH REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY $1,000,000, OUT OF STATE
OF FLORIDA GRANT MONIES, FOR THE ACQUISITION OF PROPERTY
TO BE DEVELOPED AS THE NEW 16TH STREET BETWEEN
WASHINGTON AND COLLINS AVENUES.
ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt the attached resolution.
BACKGROUND:
On October 10th, 1995, the City of Miami Beach executed an agreement with the State of Florida,
Department of Commerce, Division of Economic Development for a $2,000,000 grant to
undertake the extension of 16th Street between Collins and Washington Avenues. The project
budget calls for $1,000,000 to be used for property acquisition and $1,000,000 for the streetscape
improvements. This important redevelopment activity is essential to relieve existing and
anticipated traffic congestion as a result of new development activity planned and/or underway in
the area.
ANALYSIS
Since the grant was awarded to the City of Miami Beach to undertake the project, and the newly
created extension of 16th Street will also be maintained by the City, the Redevelopment Agency
must deed that portion of property comprising the 16th Street right-of-way between Collins and
Washington A venues to the City.
Since the Redevelopment Agency has undertaken the necessary property acquisition to undertake
the project, execution of the Quit Claim Deed will be subject to receipt of $1,000,000 from the
City.
