BACKGROUND: Beach Patrols throughout the United States have had a rich tradition of athletic competitions developed to test their lifeguard related skills. The City's Beach Patrol has traditionally participated in a variety of competitive lifeguard events. These events usually include surf boat (row boat style) races, rescue skill/speed races, line pull races, paddle board races and timed running. Over the years lifeguards from the City of Miami Beach have distinguished both the City and themselves while participating in such competition on the local, regional, and national level. Participation in these events builds comradeship and increases morale. The necessary training also enhances the lifeguards' conditioning and rescue related skills. ANALYSIS: This $15,000 donation will enable the Beach Patrol Division to purchase two surf (row) boats and other competition equipment so that they can train and participate in competitive events. CONCLUSXON: The City Commission should accept this cash donation of $15,000 from the Ocean Drive Association. MDB/KS/KM AGENDA ITEM ~ 1/\ Z-l.~ DATE 13
