A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, RETROACTIVELY APPROVING TII'iE
ACCEPTANCE OF THE GRANT AND APPROPRIATION OF $122,200..00
IN HIGH INTENSITY DRUG TRAFFICKING AREA PROGRAM (HITCIA)
GRANT FUNDS, FOR SEVENTH YEAR FUNDING.
WHEREAS, the Miami Beach Police Department is desirous of increasin~1 liw
enforcement activities so as to interdict drug trafficking and combat gang activity; ana:
WHEREAS, such increase in law enforcement activities is expected to result in reduced
street and property crime; and
WHEREAS, the Federal Government, through its High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area
Program (HIDTA), has made available funds for such activities for seventh year funding;
and
WHEREAS, the Miami Beach Police Department has been awarded $122,200.~O in
HIDTA grant funds.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND Crry
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby approve the retroactive appropriation and expenditure of $122,200. JO
in High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Program (HIDTA) Grant Funds.

ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION
Approve the resolution.
BACKGROUND
The Miami Beach Police Department has applied to the Federal Government for seventh
year funding of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Program (HIDTA). The grant funds
were awarded for the period of February 1, 1997 to January 31, 1998. These funds c.re
made available as part of a Federal/State/County and Municipal Law Enforcement Agercy
Program to reduce violent street and property crimes. The mission of the program will :>e
to interdict drug flow with the combined efforts of the U.S. Marshals, INS, Secret Service,
ATF and U.S. Customs. Additionally, the City of Miami Beach plans to target armed~a1g
offenders and federal fugitives.
Due to the cooperative nature of the HI DT A program, the Office of the Sheriff of Mom :>e
County, Florida, will be the coordinating agency for all of the funds. The City of Co "al
Gables Police Department will be a subgrantee and will administer the funds earmclrk ad
for the Miami Beach Police Department.
CONCLUSION
These funds are necessary to allow the Miami Beach Police Department to continue its
missi~7JOf combatting illegal narcotics activity within the City of Miami Beach.
