Exhibit 1/ Project Description _
[Note: The following Project Description is revised to represent the possible Grant reduction.
as a result of the potential City Resort Tax shortfall.]
Organization: The Rhythm Foundation
Project title: Miami Beach Season 2001-02
Completely describe Project approved by the Grants Panel and in a separate narrative detail the revisions to the
Project based upon the award. Please be as specific as possible; name of event, venue, times, etc. Also, detail the
organization's participation in ArtsBeach Second Thursdays. Miami Beach Anchors should list specifics about
their mentoring program.
Some changes have been made to the Rhythm Foundation's season series since the .
original grant proposal was written. These changes have been made in part due to the _
difficulties in international travel and touring after the September 11 attacks (the fall concerts
were all cancelled or postponed), or due to updated artist touring schedules. The Rhythm
Foundation will present the following, as part of the Miami Beach Season Series 2001-02:
Munequltos de Matanzas, the celebrated Cuban rumba music and dance group in their
50th anniversary season, and their Florida debut. Tuesday April 9, Gleason Theater (co-
presented with Miami Ught Project)
Master tabla artist Zaklr Hussain will lead a free workshop for tabla and percussion on
Saturday, May 4 at the Wolfsonian auditorium, open to the public. (He is performing in
concert with his group on May 3 at the Gusman in downtown)
The Summer Bandshell series includes four events at the North Beach 73rd Street
Bandshell:
Saturday June 29: The Afro Celt Sound System, a live music ensemble working with
dance styles, electronica, and African music, based in London, will perform a Miami debut
Saturday July 5: Vlve Le World celebrates Bastille Day with several groups from France
and the Francophone world: Rai artist Khaled, with African artists Ismael Lo and Souad
Massi rounding out the bill.
Saturday July 12: Nigerian star Feml Kutl now leads the band founded by his legendary
father Fela. He will perform a night of large orchestra Afrobeat
Saturday July 19: Forro Festival, featuring the accordion-based party music from Brazil's
northeast, anchored by the large ensemble "Nordestino from Pernambuco and several new
groups who incorporate forro into modern pop music. . .
August: Classical Turkish music Omar Farouk Tekbllek will perform at the COlony Theater
For the Second Thursdays series, the Rhythm Foundation will program a series of "curated
listening" events, whereby South Florida residents with innovative music collections will put
together two hours of music. with accompanying program notes. These events will take
place at various venues throughout the city, and will be free and open to the public. The
series will begin in March, and continue through the summer months.
Unfortunately, the fall tour dates by Senegalese artist Youssou N'cIour, Hermeto Pascaol
and the Dominican salve group - part of the original grant proposal - were cancelled after the
September attacks. The proposed concert by Caetano Veloso has been scheduled for
October 24 at the Gleason, which will be part of the 2002-03 season instead.
It is certain, however, that this seaason continues the work of the Rhythm Foundation's
previous scope of projects.
