DRIVING UNDE THE INFLUENCE / DRUG RECOGNITION EXPERT
SATURATION DETAIL
This letter to Commission is to advise you of the results of the D.U.I./D.R.E. Saturation
Detail which was conducted on December 29, 2001 in the South District.
In the year 2001, there were approximately 2,835 motor vehicle crashes in the South
District of Miami Beach. Of those crashes, 84 were D.U.I. related. Impaired driver crashes
are an on-going problem in this city. Despite a total of 540 D.U.I. arrests in Miami Beach
during 2001, it appears that this trend continues to increase.
On December 29, 2001, the MBPD conducted a D.U.IJD.R.E. saturation detail in the South
District. Our Officers were joined by Officers from the Miami Police Department, Hialeah
Police Department, and the Monroe County Sheriff's Department. The focus of this effort
was centered on impaired, careless, reckless, and aggressive motorists.
The results of this targeted enforcement was 78 moving citations, 2 parking citations, 1
felony arrest, 1 misdemeanor arrest, 2 traffic arrests, 5 D,U.I arrests, 3 D.R.E. (Drug
Recognition Expert) Evaluations, and 2 accident reports.
The Miami Beach Police Department will continue to support special traffic and
D.U.I./D.R.E. enforcement programs. These efforts enable the MBPD to send a message
to the citizens and visitors of this community that we will not tolerate impaired drivers.
