SATURDAY INSPECTION SERVICE FOR OVVNER-BUILDER / HOMEOWI~ PROJECTS
In an effort to provide an enhanced level of inspection service to homeowners, both
condominium and single-family, I have directed the Building Department to initiate a
Saturday Inspection Service. The service is intended to provide relief of required weekday
inspection time for owner-builder permit holders, and for all minor projects by contractors
where owners of single-family homes or condominium units, due to personal security
reasons, are compelled to stay home. The Saturday Inspection Service is planned to
commence on February 2, 2002.
As with all enhanced service levels, the Saturday Inspection Service comes with an
additional cost to the City. Based on the current salary levels and a rotating schedule
among the staff available for Saturdays, the annual over-time cost may add up to $67,000.
VVhile the incoming permit fees will cover the $67,000 cost, there will be no additional
revenues collected, since the residents will not be charged the overtime costs. This differs
from the commercial overtime inspections, which are paid for directly by the developers /
contractors.
This service will be implemented and continued on a trial basis for a six months period, and
at the end of the trail period, if demand for Saturday inspections is enough to justify the
cost, the service will continue.
If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know.
