Gonzalez r!.}1~ City Manager ~ Date: December 27,2001 Subject: NEW YEAR'S WEEKEND 2001-2002 The purpose of this Letter to the Commission is to provide the Mayor and Commission with an update regarding the New Year's weekend events beginning Friday, December 28, 2001 through Wednesday, January 2, 2002. The City of Miami Beach and Ocean Drive Association are sponsoring a free Fireworks show on a barge off Lummus Park at midnight on New Year's Eve. You are invited to view the fireworks from the rooftop of The Hotel located at 801 Collins Avenue. Your office will be contacted personally to work out the details. While several special events permits have been issued primarily at private venues, no significant crowd attracting event is planned. A private, invitation only, party is planned at the Shore Club at 1925 Collins Avenue hosted by P. Diddy and Janet Jackson and is expected to be aired live on MTV. A number of other celebrities have been invited and are expected to attend. Additionally, many Miami Beach nightclubs, which will be hosting special New Years events, will be extending their hours of operation from 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. The City has been working diligently with the area hotels and nightclubs to ensure that resources and security are appropriately allocated for this weekend. Transportation and Parkina Ocean Drive (5th - 15th streets) will only be open to pedestrian traffic beginning Monday morning, December 31, 2001 and re-opening to vehicular traffic on Wednesday morning, January 2, 2002. East-West vehicular traffic will be restricted from 6th Street to 15th Street beginning at 6 p.m. on Monday, December 31,2001 to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, January 1, 2002. Residents with decals to park in these areas will be permitted in this area. Ocean Drive valet operations will be moved to Collins Avenue throughout the event. Valet operators will be afforded access through 11th Street. Park & ride service will be available beginning at 4:00 p.m. on New Year's Eve through 8:00 a.m. New Year's Day. Bus shuttles will operate along Washington and Collins Avenue. " ,r , The following is the Parking/Park-n-Ride plan (4,200 spaces flat parking rate) for New Year's Eve: Miami Beach - ih Street Garage ($10), 1ih Street Garage ($8), 13th Street Garage ($8), and 16th Street Garage ($10). The following locations' rates include parking and free shuttle (the rates include the first hour at no additional cost): 1ih Street Garage ($5); 17th Street lot ($5) and the Preferred lot ($3). Electrowave shuttles will provide services at no charge from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. For more information on the Electrowave, call 305-THE-WAVE, and for parking information 305-673-PARK. VIP parking for City officials will be provided on 8th Street between Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue (placards to be provided). Business/Residents Notices The attached notice has been disseminated to area residents and the entertainment district businesses advising them of the City's traffic plans and information Hotline. Police/Fire/Parkina/Sanitation/Code Staffina Enhanced staffing levels will be provided during the New Year's weekend and to enable the Ocean Drive Street closure. Police and Fire staff will be available at Ocean Drive to be able to respond to on-site incidents. Information Hotlines A 24-hour information hotline (305-673-7400) is in operation. A free fireworks show will light up the skies over Ocean Drive once again at the stroke of 12 midnight. And Ocean Drive cafes, between 5th and 15th streets, will be extending their party areas into the street for this festive night of pomp and circumstance. Ocean Drive will close to vehicular traffic beginning at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, December 31 and will reopen on Wednesday, January 2 at 6:00 a.m. East/west side streets between 6th and 14th streets will be dosed from 6:00 p.m. on December 31 through 6:00 a.m. on January 1. Residents with decals to park in these areas will be permitted in this area. Miami Beach entertainment industry will be in full swing as well.
