CONVENTION CENTER STUDY
Date: February 13, 2002
About a year ago the Greater Miami Conventions and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) issued an
RFP and commissioned a Convention Center needs assessment study for the Miami Dade
County area.
GMCVB contracted with Convention Sports & Leisure Intemational (CSL) to conduct said
study and a separate oversight committee was established by the GMCVB to review CSL's
progress reports. The Oversight Committee was co-chaired by Donald Lefton and myself.
Atta6hed you will find the Executive Summary and Final CSL report which was finalized
and accepted by the GMCVB Board on December 14, 2001.
The study analyzed the potential expansion of convention facilities in the Miami-Dade
region by assessing the existing convention industry and its potential gaps, the competitive
position of the destination's convention industry package and its implications for future
facility development in Miami-Dade County.
In summary, as it relates to Miami Beach, it is recommended that 50,000 sf. multipurpose
general assembly banquet hall would increase the marketability of the Miami Beach
Convention Center, focusing on large exhibit space users and not for stand-alone events.
While the study made no other substantive recommendations for other area facilities, it was
recommended that the Downtown/City of Miami should, over the next four to six years,
evaluate variables affecting pursuing a Downtown Miami Convention Center.
The recommendations contained within the CSL report will be evaluated by the
Administration in the context of the Convention Development Tax planned expenditures
with a final recommendation to the City Commission.
