To commemorate the achievements of individuals and organizations that work for the benefit of the
residents of Miami Beach, the City of Miami Beach has, for the past two years. awarded the
Community Heroes Awards as recognition to outstanding individuals and organizations making a
positive difference. The Community Heroes Awards program has been so successful, that in 2001,
the Administration made it an annual awards program to coincide with the National Community
Development Week celebration and revised the selection criteria for the awards.
Criteria for nomination include: Any individual, public or private nonprofit organization,
governmental agency, voluntary organization, or for-profit organization that has received CDBG
or HOME funds in the past and has made significant contributions to the Miami Beach community.
Criteria for selection of award recipients include: Outstanding volunteer work, serve as community
leaders or role models, demonstrate acts of generosity or kindness and/or perform extraordinary
accomplishments. Any Miami Beach resident, company, voluntary/non-profit or governmental
organization, or agency operating in the City of Miami Beach makes nominations. A panel,
comprised of members of the Community Relations Board, reviews the nominations and selects
the award winners. Attached is a nomination form.
This year National Community Development Week will be the week of April 1st to April P'. This
annual national celebration is when entitlement cities across the country commemorate the myriad
achievements made possible through the use of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and
HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) funds.
In keeping with the Administration's desire to recognize the award winners during the celebration
of National Community Development Week, the Administration has officially opened the nomination
period and set a deadline for nominations of March 8, 2002. Award recipients will be notified and
invited to attend an award presentation to take place April 2, 2002, during the celebration of
National Community Development Week 2002 in the City of Miami Beach. Nominations should be
directed to the attention of Joanna Revelo, Community Development Director.

CDBG: Uniting Communities Across America
NOMINATION INFORMATION
CRITERIA
Nominations are open to Miami Beach residents,
companies, voluntary/non-profit or governmental
organizations, or agencies operating in the City
of Miami Beach that have received federal grant
funds in the past from the following programs:
Community Development Block Grant (CDBG),
Emergency Shelter Grants (ESG), HOME
Investment Partnerships (HOME), and/or
Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS
(HOPW A), and have made significant
contributions to the Miami Beach community.
Nominees must have demonstrated outstanding
volunteer work, serve as community leaders or
role models, demonstrate acts of generosity or
kindness and/or have performed extraordinary
accomplishments.
Members of the Community Relations Board, the
Community Development Advisory Committee,
and/or the Community Development Division
may not be nominated or make nominations.
SELECTION PROCESS
A nomination review panel, comprised of
representatives from the City of Miami Beach
Community Relations Board will review all
nominations. The nominator may be contacted
to verify the information provided. The
nomination review panel will then forward the
recommendations to the Community
Development Division.

Award recipients will be chosen in the following
categories:

. Organization
. Government Agency
. Business Partner
NOTIFICATION
Award recipients will be notified by mail and
invited to attend an award presentation to take
place on April 2nd, coinciding with the
celebration of National Community Development
Week 2002 in the City of Miami Beach.
PROCEDURE
Nominations are open to Miami Beach residents,
companies, voluntary/non-profit or governmental
organizations, or agencies operating in the City
of Miami Beach may submit a nomination.
Members of the Community Relations Board, the
Community Development Advisory Committee,
and/or the Community Development Division
may not be nominated or make nominations.

THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH SEEKS COMMUNITY HEROES
Miami Beach - Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager, announced today that the City of Miami Beach is
seeking nominations for the third annual Community Heroes Awards, a program to commemorate the
achievements of individuals and organizations benefiting the residents of Miami Beach. It is an annual

GRANT FUNDS TO REVITALIZE THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT WEEK DECLARED
TO COMMEMORATE AcmEVEMENTS
Miami Beach - Mayor David Dermer announced today that the City of Miami Beach will receive
approximately $2.8 million Community Development Block Grant funds in 2002 to help revitalize the
community. To commemorate the 27th year of receiving these funds, the Mayor and City Commission
have declared Aprill st to April ?th as Community Development Week 2002, a week long celebration of
the achievements of the Community Development Grant Program and its impact on the Miami Beach
community. In a ceremony to be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2nd, the City will present the third
annual Community Heroes Awards to prominent Miami Beach leaders and/or organizations, whose
efforts have contributed to the community.
According to Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager, the City of Miami Beach expects to receive $2,777,000
in CDBG funds for fiscal year 2002. CDBG funds will be used to provide broad-based community
services that run the gamut from hot meals to neighborhood revitalization; to programs to assist the
homeless and prevent homelessness; from child care services to elderly services; from vocational tuition
waivers to home-delivered meals. The programs funded with CDBG funds benefit one in every eight of
the City's residents.
"The City has declared the Week of Aprill st to April ?th as Community Development Week to
commemorate the important programs that CDBG funds have supported throughout the years," said Mr.
Gonzalez. "CDBG funds have revitalized our neighborhoods, provided important public services and
helped spur the economic development in our community."
For the past several years, the largest allotment ofCDBG funds has been channeled to projects that
provide citywide services and programs, resulting in economic revitalization that has impacted all
residents of the areas.
