LTC 51-2002 CITY OF MIAMI BEACH Office of the City Manager Letter to Commission No. TO: From: Subject: Mayor David Dermer and Data: March 4, 2002 REVISED INFORI~~TION REGARDING: DEMONSTRATION NOTIFICATION/PROTEST, A RALLY OF HOPE, IN ADVOCACY OF A HOMELESS SHELTER Due to the cancellation of the previously scheduled meeting this is a revised notification that on March 6, 2002, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., a demonstration organized by Civilians in Action, will take place at the south entrance of Miami Beach City Hall by 17u~ Street. This protest will be held in a press conference fashion and there will be no picketing. It is estimated that 50 people will be in attendance. Police, Parking, Miami Beach Convention Center, Neighborhood Services Departments have been notified. The producer of this event was notified that if the demonstration interferes with traffic on Convention Center Drive and/or 17~h Street, or excess noise is produced, or other laws and ordinances broken, the demonstration will be terminated by the City of Miami Beach Police. Mr. Rafael Antonio Velasquez, Esquire, producer of this demonstration, is advocating for an emergency homeless shelter as defined by the Miami Dade Homeless Trust Continuum of Care system in Miami Beach. Mr. Velasquez is proposing that the emergency shelter be built at 328-334 Jefferson Avenue, which is currently owned by the Housing Authority of the City of Miami Beach (HACOMB). However, the Housing Authority has sent Mr. Velasquez a letter requesting that he refrain from citing any contributions, land and case management services, pledged by HACOMB to support the proposed emergency shelter.
