SUBJECT:
The purpose of this LTC is to provide the Mayor and Commission with an update
describing some of the areas the Administration focused on during the week of
March 25, 2002.
Major Events Planning Meetings - Representatives of the Administration met
to finalize details for the Sports and Fitness Event taking place on South Beach
from March 28-31, 2002 and to continue with our preparations for the Memorial
Day holiday weekend from May 24-27, 2002. In addition, the Mayor and
Manager met with Luther Campbell and representatives from the NAACP to
discuss issues related to the Memorial Day weekend. A report on the City's
plans for the holiday weekend will be presented at the April 10 Commission
meeting.
Neighborhood Leadership Academy - The Neighborhood Leadership
Academy, the civic and public information program designed for residents of
Miami Beach and provides them with the information and resources to become
more knowledgeable members of our diverse community, held its third session
on March 25, with the Neighborhood Services Department and its various
Divisions making a presentation. The participant's surveys completed at the end
of the session were extremely positive.
Parking Commission Workshop - Was held on March 25 to discuss the City's
parking meter rates, hours of enforcement, and maximum time limits. The latter
issue, parking meter maximum time limits, was discussed at length in that their
would be a benefit to extending existing two hour maximum time limits to
potentially four hour maximum time limits in order to accommodate and be
consistent with adjacent land uses. This issue will be on the April 10
Commission Meeting for referral to the May 6, 2002 Transportation and Parking
Committee for their review, input, and recommendation for potential areas where
maximum time limits could be expanded.

Winter Music Conference - The Mayor and City Manager participated in a
documentary that is being produced by a London-based production company
about the Winter Music Conference that took place on Miami Beach from March
22-27, 2002. Issues discussed included the economic impact that the
Conference has on the City and what the City has to offer all who come to visit.
Miami Beach Police Department Retirees Wall of Honor Ceremony - Was
held on March 26 to honor twenty-seven Miami Beach Police Officers who have
retired or passed away but who served the City with loyalty and bravery. All
twenty-seven names were added to the Retirees Wall of Honor located in the
main entrance of the Police Headquarters.
Bass Museum Board of Trustees Meeting - Was held on March 26 to discuss
several issues relating to the Museum, including ongoing construction projects,
and the Friends of the Bass, which the Trustees agreed to have a separate
meeting to further discuss the budget for the Friends of the Bass. In addition, the
Trustees approved the In the Spirit of Martin: The Living Legacy of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. exhibit which is scheduled to take place at the Museum between
September 7 - November 10, 2002. This exhibit is the first major exhibition to
use the visual arts to explore the inspiring life and enduring legacy of Dr. King
and presents a diverse group of artists celebrating his life and responding to his
vision of universal democracy and equality.
Miami-Dade Community College - The City Manager met with Dr. Eduardo
Padron, President of Miami-Dade Community College, to discuss issues of
mutual concern and possible ways that the City and College can partner in the
future on different initiatives.
