WEEKLY UPDATE
Date: April 12, 2002
TO:
SUBJECT:
The purpose of this LTC is to provide the Mayor and Commission with an update
describing some of the areas the Administration focused on during the weeks of
April 1 and 8, 2002.
Miami Beach Homeless Providers Network - The Neighborhood Services
Department, Office of Homeless Coordination, scheduled the first meeting of this
group. A total of 16 Miami Beach homeless providers attend the meeting. This
session afforded the providers an opportunity to network, identify gaps and
needs and initiate a discussion on maximizing existing resources. This will be the
first in series of network meetings. Future meetings will include representation
from the Miami-Dade Homeless Trust and Veteran's Administration.
CIP Brown Bag Lunch - The City Manager held a lunch session with staff from
the Capitol Improvements Projects Office. The discussion centered around the
variety of the projects the CIP staff are working on and ways to keep residents
updated about our progress.
Commission Workshops - A Commission Workshop was held on April 4 to
discuss the Electrowave service and other related capital projects, including the
Municipal Mobility Plan and a Commission Workshop was held on April 5 to
discuss the findings and recommendations of the Mayor's Blue Ribbon Tourism
Task Force.
Neighborhood Leadership Academy - The Neighborhood Leadership
Academy, the civic and public information program designed for residents of
Miami Beach and provides them with the information and resources to become
more knowledgeable members of our diverse community, held its fourth session
on April 8, with the Planning Department presenting. The participant's surveys
completed at the end of the session were extremely positive.
Neighborhood Services I Mayor on the Move - Approximately 40 area
residents participated in this session held at the Miami Heart Institute on April 8,
for the Bayshore, Pancoast, and Sunset Islands Neighborhoods. The meeting
was an open discussion forum where people shared their neighborhood quality of
life concerns with the Mayor, several Commissioners and City administration.
The following four items were identified as neighborhood priorities: (1) City
construction projects in the 28th Street area - concerns were about temporary
parking alternatives for area residents until construction is complete and the need
for regular updates about the status of the projects; (2) Code Compliance - the
need to educate area residents about prohibitions regarding illegal subdivisions
of their houses to create rental rooms and apartments; (3) Bayshore Golf Course
and the Trash Transfer Station - the need for regular project updates on the
status of completion and information about what the results of the projects will
be; and (4) Indian Creek Greenway Project - general public information about
what a greenway is and the progress of the efforts to create one on Indian Creek.
A comprehensive overview addressing the four identified priorities will be
provided to the Bayshore, Pancoast, and Sunset Islands Neighborhoods in the
form of a newsletter.
Ocean Drive - The Mayor and representatives from the Administration met on
April 8 with a number of stakeholders from Ocean Drive to discuss the future of
Ocean Drive and other related issues including future street closures, special
events, the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, and the business improvement
district along Ocean Drive.
Police Promotional Ceremony - Was held on April 8 to promote four of our
Miami Beach Police Officers and swear them into their new ranks.
Nightlife Industry Task Force - Met on April 9 to continue discussing
preparations for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend. A follow-up
meeting has been scheduled for May 1, 2002.

local government best practices. The delegates, sponsored by Georgetown
University, met with representatives from the Arts, Culture and Entertainment
Planning and Economic Development areas of the City.

Symphony to review a proposed term sheet that should be presented to the City
Commission regarding the future development of Soundspace. Various
elements of the 17th St. Masterplan including the Soundspace, adjacent
proposed garage, the park and the City Hall Expansion garage were discussed
as prime elements of the masterplan that must be considered as part of the
future lease and development of the New World Symphony building. A follow-up
meeting was scheduled for May 9th.
Public Technology Inc. Annual Conference - City Manager attended this
event which is the premiere technology conference for the public sector and met
with other managers from around the country to talk about issues of mutual
concern as well as learn about the most innovative advances in the industry.
