SUBJECT: Appointment to the Committee for th Review of the Draft Fourth National
Climate Assessment
ion
I am pleased to announce that Assistant City Manager/Chief Resiliency Officer Susy
Torriente has been invited to serve on the National Academies of Science, Engineering
& Medicine (the Academies) Committee for the Review of the Draft Fourth National
Climate Assessment (NCA). The NCA report is the official U.S. government's "State of
the Union" about climate change, vetted by 13 federal agencies. The NCA summarizes
the best -available science on observed and projected climate changes, as well as its
impacts on human health, regions of the country and tribal communities. The NCA,
mandated by Congress in 1990, is developed by the U.S. Global Change Research
Program to help the nation "understand, assess, predict and respond to" climate change.
This report focuses on the United States exclusively, providing solid information on each
of eight geographic regions, coasts, and ocean and marine resources and it includes
"sectoral" information on the effects of climate change on topics such as, biodiversity,
health, coastal zone development and ecosystems, water resources, energy, and land
use, to name a few.
The first public draft of the Fourth National Climate Assessment (NCA) was released for
public comment earlier this month. The Academies' review will provide an overall critique
of the draft report concurrent with the public comment period and will address a number
of specific questions about accuracy, transparency and credibility.
I want to congratulate Susy on this appointment and recognition. I know she will well
represent the interest of South Florida and Mliami Beach with her practical local
government perspective.
