The purpose of this LTC is to provide the Mayor and Commission with an update
describing some of the areas the Administration focused on during the week of
May 13, 2002:
Neighborhood Leadership Academy - The Neighborhood Leadership
Academy, the civic and public information program designed for residents of
Miami Beach that provides them with the information and resources to become
more knowledgeable members of our diverse community, met on May 13 with
representatives of the Parking Department presenting. The participant's surveys
completed at the end of each session were extremely positive and the residents
participating keep offering very positive feedback about the sessions. The final
two presentations will be by the Fire Department on May 20 and the Police
Department on June 3. The "graduation" ceremony is scheduled to take place
during the June 19 Commission meeting.
Memorial Day Weekend 2002 - Representatives from the Administration have
continued to meet to plan, prepare and allocate resources for the holiday
weekend. Meetings took place this week with representatives from the hotels,
nightclubs, the Ocean Drive Association, and the Miami Beach Chamber of
Commerce's Board of Governors all on May 14; an internal planning meeting
with representatives from the City on May 15; and a community meeting on May
16. An additional community meeting has been scheduled for Monday, May 20.
Additional and updated details will be provided to the Mayor and Commission in
the form of an LTC this week.
MTV Latin Music Awards - The Mayor and representatives from the
Administration met with representatives from MTV to discuss plans for a
proposed MTV Latin Music Awards to possibly take place at the Jackie Gleason
Theater of Performing Arts in October 2002. Additional details will be provided
as soon as they become available.
Lincoln Road Town Hall Meeting - The Mayor and representatives from the
Commission and Administration met with representatives from Lincoln Road in a
town hall meeting format on May 15 to discuss various issues affecting Lincoln
Road, including the new Florida Building Code regarding sidewalk cafes, the
major events plan for the Memorial Day weekend, advertising on the new pay
telephones, and a discussion regarding the various markets that take place on
Lincoln Road.
Manager's Brown Bag Lunch - The City Manager met informally over lunch
with staff from the Arts, Culture and Entertainment, VCA, and Bass Museum to
discuss issues of mutual concern.
Neighborhood Services 1 Mayor on the Move Meeting - Approximately 120
residents attended the Mayor on the Move North Beach District Meeting held at
The North Shore Activities Center on May 15. The meeting was an open
discussion forum where residents shared their neighborhood quality of life
concerns with the Mayor, representatives from the Commission and the
Administration. Those in attendance identified a number of concerns affecting
the community's quality of life. The following issues were identified as
neighborhood priorities: (1) Dumping in Waterways, (2) North Beach
Recreational Corridor, (3) Residential Parking, (4) Illegal Dumping, (5) Public
Works issues, (6) Graffiti, (7) Code Compliance issues, (8) Speeding, (9) and
Homeless related issues. A comprehensive overview addressing the identified
priorities will be provided to the North Beach District in the form of a newsletter
and or informational handout.
Royal Palm Crowne Plaza Hotel - Representatives from the Administration
attended the opening on May 15 and Commissioner Cruz, the City Manger and
the City Attorney met on May 16 with representatives from the Royal Palm to
continue dialoguing about issues related to the Hotel and the City.
All-America City Award - Representatives from the Administration have been
continuing to meet to plan for the award competition taking place in Kansas City
from June 13-15, 2002. As one of 30 finalist communities, the City will send a
delegation of residents, business owners, elected officials, and City staff to
Kansas City to present and discuss our application and make a presentation that
covers all aspects of our application.
Departmental Budget Reviews - The City Manager and representatives from
the Office of Management and Budget continued to meet with representatives
from City Departments to discuss budget plans and allocations for the 2002-2003
fiscal year.
Miami Dade City and County Management Association - Representatives
from the Administration attended the installation dinner of this professional
Association where the City Manager was awarded the Association's first ever
Leadership Award established to honor individuals who by force or initiative,
innovation and perseverance have made an outstanding and significant
contribution to the public interest in the area of government performance,
leadership, ethics and policy.
Employee Picnic - Several hundred employees attended our annual employee
picnic held on May 18 where a good time was had by all employees and their
families who were able to attend. The Planning Committee did an outstanding
job in coordinating this year's event.
