RE: ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING THE CITY ATTORNEY TO DETERMINE
COMPENSATION FOR EMPLOYEES IN THE OFFICE OF THE CITY
ATTORNEY
Our office is recommending adoption of the attached Ordinance
which provides for the City Attorney to determine the compensation
for all employees in the Office of the City Attorney. Currently
Ordinance i 0. _1 605 establishes dla_ry ranges and provides for cost
of living and longevity raises for all unclassified employees in
the City, including attorneys. It is the opinion of the City
Attorney that his staff are professionals who should be compensated
in accordance with performance rather than according to a fixed
system of increase. In other municipalities compensation for the
attorneys are not tied to any fixed formula.
As the method of compensation utilized since 1990 for
attorneys has not, in fact, included cost of living increases, and
as longevity alone should play no role in salary determinations,
the City Commission is requested to approve this Ordinance.
