OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
NO. LTC # 028-2018
TO: Mayor Dan Gelber and Memb, rsof the City Commission
LETTER TO COMMISSION
FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City.M
DATE: January 18, 2018
SUBJECT: 2018 Miami Yacht Show Update.
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to inform the Mayor and Commission of the
upcoming 2018 Miami Yacht Show, taking place on Collins Avenue from 41St Street to 54th Street
from Thursday, February 15 — Monday, February 19, 2018.
The show's new layout along Indian Creek Waterway, with more than 500 boats and yachts on
display specifically highlights yachts and superyachts from the world's foremost custom boat
builders.
In 2015, show management developed a plan to eliminate floating polystyrene (Styrofoam) from
contaminating the show site waterway. The plan was to encapsulate or encase all float drums
within five years, at a cost of $2.8 Million, with an estimated full completion of the mitigation
project in 2020. I am very pleased to report that the show management decided to fast track
this process, resulting in the project advancing to completion two years ahead of schedule. The
2018 Miami Yacht Show will have 100% of their floats fully encapsulated. A letter detailing
this process is attached here.
The show has noticed and is finalizing all lease agreements with each of the upland properties
from 41St Street to 51St Street.

Re: 2018 Yachts Miami Beach, Floating Dock Encapsulating Project
Dear Eva,
As you are aware, in 2015, Show Management developed an aggressive mitigation plan to eliminate floating
Polystyrene (Styrofoam) from contaminating the show site waterway. The reactive portion of the plan
included floating protection booms installed throughout the show site, on•water clean ups crews, on -land
cleanup crews, etc. The proactive portion of the plan was to eliminate the root cause of the contamination
by encapsulating and/or encasing all float drums in our inventory within 5 years at a cost $2.8 million dollar.
The initial timeline was as follows:
Year
No. of Float Units
No. of Dock Units
2016
200
25
2017
1,600
200
2018
1,200
150
2019
1,474
184
2020
1,526
190
During the initial manufacturing and assembly processes we found if we added manufacturing equipment,
increase transportation frequencies and improved assembly processes we could complete the project in half
the initial time line. Although the financial impact was quite large we felt the timeline reduction was a "must
do" to eliminate our negative impact to the environment.
Good News! The project has been completed 2 years ahead of schedule.
For the 2018 Yachts Miami Beach, we will have 100% of our floats encapsulated.
