Resolution 2018-30157RESOLUTION NO. 2018 -30157
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, OPPOSING THE TRUMP
ADMINISTRATION'S DECISION TO END TEMPORARY PROTECTED
STATUS FOR SALVADORAN IMMIGRANTS IN THE UNITED
STATES.
WHEREAS, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen recently
announced that Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for immigrants from El Salvador that are in the
United States will end on September 9, 2019; and
WHEREAS, after September 9, 2019, approximately 200,000 Salvadorans will have to leave
the United States or adjust their legal status, or they will be subject to deportation; and
WHEREAS, El Salvador is the fourth country whose citizens have lost TPS under the Trump
Administration; and
WHEREAS, the TPS program is provided to immigrants whose countries have experienced
natural disasters or other strife, and Salvadorans have received protection from the program since
earthquakes struck their country in 2001 killing more than 1,000 people, and many Salvadorans came
to the United States fleeing violence and poverty; and
WHEREAS, the decision to end TPS protection and force Salvadorans back to their native
country presents a serious challenge for El Salvador, whose economy depends on remittances from
wage - earners in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Congress has a responsibility to provide solutions to address the immigration
plight of not only the Salvadorans, but of the dreamers, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Hondurans who
have all become contributing members of our society and economy; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission oppose the Trump Administration's decision to
end protections for immigrants from El Salvador who are in the United States.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby oppose
the Trump Administration's decision to end Temporary Protected Status for Salvadoran immigrants in
the United States.
