1869 DADE COUNTY (FLA) TAX ROLL
By Larry Wiggins
County tax rolls are a little known, excellent source of information. They
are available for most Florida counties and are located in the Florida State
Archives in Tallahassee. They have been microfilmed by the Mormon Library and
are available through the local Family History libraries through the inter-
library loan program.
The original records are bound volumes submitted between 1829 and 1881 to
the State Comptroller by the county tax collectors to document the amount of
state taxes collected on real and personal property. The information varies
considerably over this period of time, but generally included is the name of the
taxpayer, the amount of land owned, location of land, number of slaves, horses,
wagons, and other personal property items subject to taxation. Many of the
counties represented have broken or incomplete runs of volumes. Due to the lack
of an index or any other means of ready access to these records, the State
Archives staff cannot provide reference service by mail.
The following is a list of taxpayers on the Dade County, Florida tax roll
for 1869. The information shown here was abstracted from the microfilm and this
list does not include all information available, however, all taxpayers are
listed.
