Project description as approved by Grants Panel:
Miami short Film Festival (MsFF)-16th Edition (18-20 screenings)
The 2017 festival is scheduled to run from November 6-11, 2017 one screening each evening
at 7:30pm at Miami Beach Cinematheque in Miami Beach, and two screenings offered each
evening at 6:00pm and 8:00pm at the Cinepolis in Coconut Grove. Each screening is
thematically distinct and consists of 5-8 films, each film no more than 20 minutes in length.
Themes have traditionally included a date night, a local showcase, an international showcase,
black cinema, queer cinema, as well as universal themes such as transgression, loneliness,
family, and work life. Each screening culminates with a panel discussion featuring film directors
and critics.
A departure from previous iterations of the festival, MsFF will celebrate its first outdoor premier
in Soundscape Park at the New World Center on Monday, November 6th. Previously, the
festival's outdoor performance was held at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden in mid-
December to close out the season. This change in programming will allow for larger audience
and greater visibility.
The festival screenings are ticketed: $15 for Adults; $7 for Students and Seniors with ID; 100
seats reserved for Golden Ticket; and 100 seats reserved for Culture Shock. Festival box office
revenue accounts for roughly 15% of annual cash revenues. Total 2017 festival attendance is
expected to reach 7,000 individuals.
MsFF receives approximately 850 submissions annually from over 35 countries(Nov. 21, 2016-
Aug. 15, 2017). The five-person MsFF Advisory Board reviews each film submitted. The
Advisory Board consists of MsFF board members and serve on a rotating volunteer basis. Of
the 850 submissions, approximately 100 films are selected to be screened by the festival's jury.
The Jury is composed of a mosaic of 40 distinguished filmmaking industry experts selected by
the Advisory Board, and is responsible for selecting the best films that exemplify the artistry of
short films. Those films selected by the Jury (approximately 50)will be officially screened at the
festival.Applicants will be notified on August 28, 2017. Film submissions contribute to a large
portion (roughly 35%) of MsFF's cash revenues. The submission fees are$25 for early
submissions and $85 for late submissions.
As with other film festivals, submissions compete for awards within categories such as films
shot on mobile device, music video, web series, documentary, experimental, comedy, drama,
animation, LGBTQ, and locally made. Additionally, there are Jury, Audience, Director, and Best
of the Fest Awards. With the exception of the Audience Award, the Jury awards during the
festival at least 50 directors, producers and actors travel from all over the world to attend and
participate in the festival events.
