1 — The
Trust did not
release formal census counts for the August 2016 census.
As a comparison, the total count for Miami -Dade County's street homeless rose slightly:
City of Miami 640 665
City of Miami Beach 156 124
All Other Areas of Miami -Dade County 186 241
While the census measures homeless encountered on the streets on one day and at one
point -in -time (10pm to 6am), it is not the total reflection of homelessness in our
community. The City tracks its homeless in various ways including street outreach, the
Walk-in Center (555 — 17t" Street), and Police Referrals.
While the census identified 124 homeless people at that point in time, the City actually
placed 570 people in shelter of the 1,571 people encountered who self -identified as
homeless throughout last fiscal year. This represents a decrease from the number of
homeless people encountered in FY15/16 or a decrease of 21.4%. Since October 1,
2015, the City has placed 1,246 people in shelter.
