Resolution From The Historic Preservation Board Date: June 4, 2002 To: Subject: Attached, please find a copy of a resolution adopted by the Historic Preservation Board at their May 14, 2002 meeting. The Historic Preservation Board is urging the City of Miami Beach to adopt an Ordinance Amendment that places reasonable limits on hedge heights within the City's historic districts. The Administration would recommend that the Commission refer the matter to the Land Use Committee for formal consideration. CITY OF MIAMI BEACH HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD RESOLUTION WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach Historic Preservation Board is charged by Ordinance as serving in an advisory capacity to the City Commission and other City Boards on issues affecting the City's architecture, design, historic districts and structures; and WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Board strongly supports the efforts of the City to promote and enhance its unique social and architectural history and to improve the appearance of its streets and neighborhoods and the quality of life of its residents; WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Board strongly supports the efforts of the City to maintain and protect its historic districts as valuable historical, educational and visual resources for its residents and visitors; WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Board strongly supports the efforts of the City to provide a safe, crime-free environment for its residents and visitors; WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Board has unanimously agreed that excessive hedge heights are detrimental to the City's historic districts because they block public views of historic structures; deter crime prevention efforts by preventing light from reaching dark sidewalks; and act as nuisances to neighboring residents by blocking light, air and views and encroaching on adjacent properties. THEREFORE. it is hereby resolved that the Historic Preservation Board urges the City of Miami Beach to adopt an Ordinance Amendment which places reasonable limits on hedge heights within the City's historic districts. .." -- ----- F:\PLAN\$HPB\RESOS\RE5-HEDGES.doc
