CITY OF MIAMI BEACH
HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach Historic Preservation Board is charged by
Ordinance as serving in an advisory capacity to the City Commission and other City
Boards on issues affecting the City's architecture, design, historic districts and
structures; and
WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Board strongly supports the efforts of the
City to promote and enhance its unique social and architectural history and to improve
the appearance of its streets and neighborhoods and the quality of life of its residents;
WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Board strongly supports the efforts of the
City to maintain and protect its historic districts as valuable historical, educational and
visual resources for its residents and visitors;
WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Board strongly supports the efforts of the
City to provide a safe, crime-free environment for its residents and visitors;
WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Board has unanimously agreed that
excessive hedge heights are detrimental to the City's historic districts because they
block public views of historic structures; deter crime prevention efforts by preventing
light from reaching dark sidewalks; and act as nuisances to neighboring residents by
blocking light, air and views and encroaching on adjacent properties.
THEREFORE. it is hereby resolved that the Historic Preservation Board urges the
City of Miami Beach to adopt an Ordinance Amendment which places reasonable limits
on hedge heights within the City's historic districts.
