SUBJECT: WEEKLY UPDATE
The purpose of this LTC is to provide the Mayor and Commission with an update
describing some of the areas the Administration focused on during the week of
July 8, 2002:
Department Budget Reviews - The City Manager and representatives from
Finance and the Office of Management and Budget continued to meet throughout
the week with staff from City Departments to finalize budget plans and allocations
for the 2002-2003 fiscal-year. In addition, a budget briefing was held with the
Mayor and Commission to provide information about the budget process for the
Police and Fire Departments and the Administration. Another budget briefing
with the Mayor and Commission is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 19 in
the City Manager's Large Conference Room to focus on Operations, Internal
Services, and Economic Development and the Arts.
800 MHz Public Safety Radio System Internal Review Committee -
Representatives from the Administration met with representatives of RCC
Consultants and the two vendors who submitted proposals to upgrade the City's
800 MHz Public Safety Radio Communications System to gather additional
information in order to provide feedback to me about each system. Over the next
few weeks, technical staff will be conducting site visits to four municipalities
throughout Florida who are using the two proposed systems. The Internal
Review Committee will meet again in early August to hear reports from the site
visits and from RCC Consultants and the two vendors. The Committee will
provide me with a report of their findings that includes the pros and cons of each
system.
Nightlife Industry Task Force - Met on July 9 to discuss several issues
including club hours, distribution of flyers and handbills and nightclub outreach.
A subcommittee was formed to start discussing and planning for the 2003
Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Police Department - Four new Police Officers were sworn in this week and will
be starting the Field Training Officers Program. In addition, the Miami-Dade
County Police Chiefs Association named Sergeant Julio Yera and Detective
Larry Marrero as its "Officers of the Month" for their work with the Ana Maria
Angel murder case.
Miami-Dade County - Representatives from the Administration met again with
Miami-Dade County Manager Steve Shiver and City of Miami Manager Carlos
Gimenez to continue discussing and preparing for the upcoming site visit of
representatives from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) from July 15-17,
2002.
Bad Boys 11 Filming - Representatives from the Administration met with
representatives of the production company filming Bad Boys II to discuss
concerns regarding how the production schedule might affect residents. It was
agreed that the production company would initiate an extensive outreach
campaign to inform residents about the film schedule so that they can prepare
accordingly.
Employee Appreciation Luncheon - Over 400 City staff attended our
employee Bar-B-Que on July 11. Mayor Dermer and several Members of the
City Commission joined the festivities at the 21st Street Community Center. Over
50 employees whom I have received a letter from a resident commending their
work were recognized for their outstanding efforts in providing great customer
service.
