Home My WebLink About2002-24954 Reso RESOLUTION NO. 2002-24954 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, EXTENDING AN INVITATION TO THE CITY OF BASEL, SWITZERLAND TO BECOME A SISTER CITY AND INVITING THE PEOPLE OF BASEL, SWITZERLAND TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROGRAM. WHEREAS, the Sister City concept was inaugurated by the President of the United States in 1956 to establish greater friendship and understanding between the people of the United States and other nations through the medium of direct personal contact; and WHEREAS, to implement this program, the City of Miami Beach and other communities in the United States have been requested by Sister Cities International to affiliate with cities in other nations of similar characteristics and mutual interests; and WHEREAS, there is an ongoing partnership between the City of Miami Beach and Basel, Switzerland which, most notably, has resul ted in the five-day Art Basel Contemporary Art Show being brought to the Miami Beach Convention Center December 3 through 9, 2002; and WHEREAS, in view of the foregoing, the City of Basel, Switzerland should be invited to participate with the City of Miami Beach as its Sister City in the Sister Cities International Program; and WHEREAS, the cities of Miami Beach and Basel recognize and endorse this program with the hope that it will lead to a continued and lasting friendship and cultural exchange between the people of Miami Beach and Basel, NOW, THEREFORE BE IT DULY RESOLVED by the Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami Beach, Florida, as follows: 1. That the Mayor and City Commission of Miami Beach, on behalf of the citizens of Miami Beach, do hereby extend an invitation to the government and people of the City of Basel, Switzerland, to participate with the City of Miami Beach as its sister city for the purpose of creating greater mutual understanding and cultural exchange between the peoples of our two great cities and nations. 2. That the Mayor is hereby authorized to act as official representative of the City of Miami Beach to carry out this program. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 31st~ MAYOR July , 2002. In order to solidify the relationship we must complete the necessary steps, which include transmitting the City's Resolution to the appropriate 10/4/02 .;.;. Sunflower Page 2 of3 Government contacts in Basel. Mayor Dermer indicated that he made contact during his recent visit to Basel. Once Basel's governing body adopts the Resolution, we can then proceed with scheduling a ceremonial signing. The final document must then be transmitted to Sister City International in Washington D,C. It is my understanding that the Mayor wanted to accomplish this during the December Art Show which is less than 3 months away. On October 3rd @ 11 :00 am I will be meeting with Sam Keller and Peter Vetsch, organizers of the Miami Beach Basel Art Show. The Mayor may want to use this as an opportunity to discuss this matter further, It would be necessary to have a government official present if it is the Mayor's intention to do a ceremonial signing in Miami Beach, Please let me know how the Mayor wishes to proceed. By way of reminder, the attached Resolution needs to be sent to the contacts the Mayor made in Basel so that they can present to their Mayor and City Commission. There is no Sister City relationship unless this is accomplished, Once there is approval, we will submit to SCI in Washington and set up a "ceremonial" signing during the Art Festival.
