The purpose of this LTC is to advise the Mayor and Commission of a special event taking
place in Miami Beach on Sunday, September 22, 2002. The PUBUX FAMILY FITNESS
WEEKEND, a family focused, grassroots sports program that offers fitness opportunities
for families, will be held on September 20-22, 2002, at Collins Park. The weekend will
consist of four events, including the Coca-Cola Classic Sprint Triathlon, Lean Cuisine
Ocean Mile Swim, Stouffer's 5K Beach Run and the Nestle Sprint Kids Tri/Duathlon.
The triathlon, to be held on Sunday, September 22, 2002, will include a .25-mile swim, a
5K run and a 12-mile bike ride. The bike ride is along the following route:
Start: -Collins Avenue and 21st Street
-West on 21st Street
-North on Washington Avenue
-Northeast on Dade Boulevard
-North on Pinetree Drive
-West on 64th Street
-South on La Gorce Drive
-South on Pinetree Drive
-Turn around at 24th
-North on Pinetree Drive
-West on 64th Street
-South on La Gorce Drive
-South on Pinetree Drive
-Southwest on Dade Boulevard
-South on Washington Avenue
-East on 21st Street
This route will require a temporary closure to vehicular traffic of the inner median lanes
going north on Pinetree Drive beginning at 24th Street to 64th Street and going south on La
Gorce Drive and Pinetree Drive until 24th Street, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Vehicles will
only be allowed to make right turns throughout the course.

For the safety of the triathlon participants, vehicular traffic will not be allowed on Pinetree
Drive going north, from 41st Street to 51st Street. Vehicular traffic traveling north on
Pinetree Drive will be detoured to Collins Avenue at 41 st Street. Please note that the
outside southbound lane on Pinetree Drive between 41st and 51st will remain open to
vehicular traffic.
The Miami Beach Police Department will implement a comprehensive traffic plan that
includes over 15 police officers and numerous detour signs that will allow traffic to flow with
ease.
The Special Events Division, with the help of the Neighborhood Services Department and
the event producer, has notified all residential neighborhoods impacted by the event,
including La Gorce Island Homeowners Association, La Gorce/Pinetree Drive Homeowners
Association, Middle Beach Homeowners Association, Orchard Park Neighborhood
Association. In addition, the City has discussed the event in detail with the management of
Tower 41 apartment building on Pinetree Drive and St. John's Methodist Church and both
support the event.
