Gonzalez ~. ^ L../' City Manager ~v D A RESOLUTION F THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE ACCEPTANCE OF VARIOUS GIFTS OF ART VALUED IN TOTAL AT $1,016,700 AS DONATED TO THE BASS MUSEUM OF ART, MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA Date: November 13, 2002 To: Subject: ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION Adopt the Resolution, BACKGROUND The Bass Museum of Art collects works of art as one of its purposes and encourages donations of works of art it desires. The City of Miami Beach maintains these works and houses them in the Bass Museum of Art, ANALYSIS The Bass Museum of Art has appropriate documentation for all of the itemized works of art listed in the attached Exhibit A. The Bass Museum of Art Board of Trustees have approved the acceptance of these gifts of art totaling $1,016,700 upon the recommendation of the Museum's Director and staff on September 18, 2002. Pursuant to the Agreement between the City of Miami Beach and the Bass Family, as amended in September 1990, the Board of Trustees must submit to the City its tentative acceptance of donated works of art and "if the City Commission does not vote to reject the donation within 60 days of the date of notice, the acceptance shall become tinal and the date of acceptance shall become tinal as of the date of the vote of the board." The Museum derives its central purpose from its permanent collection of more than 3,000 objects including European old masters, 20th century and contemporary paintings, sculpture, graphics, photography, and architectural and design arts from America, Latin America and the Caribbean. Its collections are an integral part of the collective cultural fabric of the region, fully reflecting the diversity of the Museum's constituency and the interests of community collectors. The new acquisitions detailed in Exhibit A are appropriate to the goals ofthe Museum's collecting program. By accepting these works of art, the City agrees to accept all future obligations relative to preserving, restoring, storing and exhibiting the works as part of the Museum's permanent collection. November 13, 2002 Commission Memorandum Bass Museum - Acceptance of Gifts Page 2 of2 According to the Museum's Executive Director, as referenced in the attached letter, the Museum is accredited based on its collection and an approved collections management policy, which incorporates this program. Furthermore, the Director states that maintenance and insurance expenses of the new acquisitions would not increase beyond that which the City already incurs. CONCLUSION The Administration recommends the adoption of the attached Resolution authorizing the acceptance of these gifts of art, as set forth in the attached Exhibit A and totaling $1,016,700 by the City on behalf of the Bass Museum of Art and further providing that the donated works of art shall be maintained by the City in the same manner as it currently maintains other works of art in the Museum permanent collection.
