North Beach Recreational Corridor - Phase IV Grant Award
Date: November 4, 2002
To:
Subject:
This Letter To Commission is to advise the Commission that the City has secured a grant in the
amount of $1,000,000 from the Transportation Enhancement Program (TEP) for Phase IV of the
North Beach Recreational Corridor Project. The project will provide funding for a major new
extension to the North Beach Recreational Corridor, by developing bicycle/pedestrian trail facilities
to interconnect key intermodal centers, area business districts, residential neighborhoods, parking
facilities, parks and the beaches. The facilities will be directly linked to approximately 3.5 miles of
bicycle/pedestrian trail facilities. Phase IV will be built within the easement area that runs between
the ocean front properties and the sand dunes from 64th Street south to 53'd Street and will add
approximately one mile to the length of the NBRC trail. A map detailing the phases of construction
for the Corridor is attached.
In addition to the improvements and enhancements described above, Phase IV of the NBRC will
also provide the following: 1) significantly improved access for disabled persons to recreational
opportunities; 2) pedestrian scale lighting to support evening usage and security and, 3) improved
lateral beach access for police and fire/rescue vehicles for enhanced public safety.
The TEP priorities were approved by the Metropolitan Planning Organization at its meeting of
September 26, 2002. Funding will be available in the Florida Department of Transportation's fiscal
year 2007/2008 budget for this project
The City currently has funding from the TEP for other sections of the NBRC, as well as several other
projects within the City.
