The purpose of this LTC is to provide the Mayor and Commission with an update
describing some of the areas the Administration focused on during the weeks of
November 4 and November 11, 2002:
Hands on Miami Beach - Working in conjunction with the City's Volunteer
Network, Hands on Miami and E-COMB, staff representatives joined a clean-up
effort of North Shore Open Space Park on November 2. The effort
complemented work already completed by the City which includes the
preservation and enhancement of the park's coastal dune system and upgrades
to the irrigation system and landscape.
Neighborhood Leadership Academy - The Neighborhood Leadership
Academy, the civic and public information program designed to provide Miami
Beach residents with the information and resources to become more
knowledgeable members of our diverse community, started its second class
offering with twenty-five residents enrolled. Each week, various departments
present to the academy an overview of their responsibilities and services
provided. The Building Department held their presentation on November 4. The
participant's surveys, completed at the end of each session, were extremely
positive and the residents participating keep offering very positive feedback
about the sessions. The Neighborhood Services Department will compile these
results and share the feedback provided with each department that presented as
well as with the Mayor and Commission.
Royal Palm Crowne Plaza - Representatives from the administration met on
November 4 to continue discussing a variety of issues. Both sides are expected
to reach a compromise soon.
Thanksgiving Day Parade 2002 - The City successfully completed filming the
Miami Beach Parade on November 6 which will be incorporated into the "CBS
All-American Thanksgiving Day Parade." The parade, which began on Ocean

Drive and 15th Street and traveled south to 10th Street, included six floats and
several notable artists, performance groups and three marching bands. The
parade will be aired alongside coverage of the "Macy's Thanksgiving Day
Parade," on the local CBS affiliate, WFOR-4, on Thanksgiving Day, November 28
from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Art Basel I Miami Beach - Representatives from the administration will continue
meeting throughout the next several weeks to ensure that the City, and all
pertinent departments, are prepared for the event. Art Basel Miami Beach is
scheduled for December 4 - 8, 2002.
Employee Intranet - Representatives from the administration continue fine-
tuning plans and implementing changes for the City's intranet service. The
intranet, a citywide information tool designed for enhanced internal
communications with staff, is planned for launching by the end of this year.
Miami Beach Veterans Day Parade - The city co-produced the annual Miami
Beach Veteran's Day Parade, taking place on Monday, November 11. The
parade began at Washington Avenue and 17th Street and traveled down to 11th
Street. The parade route concluded in front of the Police Station and was
followed by a wreath-laying ceremony honoring fallen Miami Beach police
officers.
Good Morning America (GMA) - The popular morning show, airing on the ABC
television network, broad casted live from Ocean Drive on November 15 to a
nationwide audience. Our city proudly represented the state of Florida as part of
the ABC News' "50 States - One Nation, One Year" Tour. Accompanied by
renowned news personalities Charlie Gibson and Diane Sawyer, the show
highlighted the South Beach ambiance by doing a roaming broadcast throughout
8th and 9th Streets and Ocean Drive and on the beach with a musical
performance by popular group Bon Jovi.
