A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, INITIATED BY THE
WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FOR PEACE AND
FREEDOM, URGING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED
STATES AND MEMBERS OF CONGRESS TO SUPPORT AND
OBTAIN A WORLDWIDE FREEZE OF THE TESTING,
PRODUCTION AND DEPLOYMENT OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS ,
TO BE PROMPTLY FOLLOWED BY SERIOUS , CONTINUOUS
DISARMAMENT NEGOTIATIONS .
WHEREAS , all of humanity and civilization is living under
the ever increasing threat, either by accident or design, of a
nuclear holocaust; and
WHEREAS , the nuclear arms race is increasing the risk of
a nuclear war that could well result in the extinction of humanity;
and
WHEREAS , history has shown that every weapon produced by
one side causes the other side to equal or produce a more destruc-
tive weapon or delivery system; and
WHEREAS, according to the United States Defense
Department' s Annual Report for FY ' 82 , the "United States and the
Soviet Union are roughly equal in strategic nuclear power"
providing a logical opportunity to break the deadly cycle of
nuclear escalation and freeze the arms race where it is now; thus
saving billions of dollars and resources needed to alleviate
poverty, hunger and disease;
NOW, THEREFORE , BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY
COMMISISON OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that we fully and
wholeheartedly support an immediate bilateral U.S ./U.S.S .R.
freeze on the testing, production and deployment of nuclear weapons
to be followed by meaningful disarmament negotiations and that our
President and our U.S . Congress use all their efforts to achieve
these goals.
