SUBJECT: A RESOLUTION OF THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE MIAMI
BEACH REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY, TRANSFERRING EXISTING
FURNISHINGS FROM THE ROYAL PALM HOTEL TO RDP ROYAL
PALM LIMITED PARTNERSHIP.
RECOMMENDATION
Adopt the Resolution
BACKGROUND
When the Redevelopment Agency (the Agency) acquired the Royal Palm Hotel in January, 1995,
the former owners of the property, the Unger family, donated approximately fifty pieces of Art
Deco period furnishings that were located in the hotel, with the request that as many pieces as
possible be restored and integrated into the public areas of the new hotel. This condition was
subsequently imposed upon RDP Royal Palm Limited Partnership (the Developer), as part of the
Historic Preservation Board's development order when the original Certificate of Appropriateness
for demolition for portions of the Royal Palm and Shorecrest Hotels was granted.
ANALYSIS
Since the acquisition of the Royal Palm, the Agency has been paying for storage of the furnishings.
William Cary, the City's Historic Preservation Officer, has prepared an inventory of the furnishings
and will determine which pieces merit restoration. For the most part, the furnishings are in very
poor condition. Those pieces which cannot be restored or used in the hotel will be returned to the
City for disposition.

This resolution transfers ownership of and responsiblity for restoring the furnishings to the
Developer, as well as responsibility for the storage expenses.
CONCLUSION
Adoption of this resolution will not only allow the Developer to assume payment of the storage
account, but will also allow the developer to assess the condition of the furnishings and how best
to incorporate them into the hotel. Any unused pieces will be returned to the City.
The Administration recommends adoption of this Resolution.
