2018-30201 Resolution RESOLUTION NO. 2018-30201
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING A $750 PER MONTH INCREASE
TO THE STIPEND RECEIVED BY THE CITY COMMISSIONERS, WHICH
INCREASE SHALL BE PAID FROM BUDGETED FUNDS IN THE CITY'S
FISCAL YEAR 2017-2018 BUDGET AND SHALL BE INCLUDED IN ALL
FUTURE ANNUAL CITY BUDGETS.
WHEREAS, the duties of the Mayor and City Commissioners oftentimes greatly exceed the
part-time nature of their positions, for which the City Charter only provides annual salaries of $10,000
and $6,000 for the Mayor and City Commissioners, respectively; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commissioners currently receive a monthly stipend of $2,000
and $1,500, respectively, to help offset the expenses associated with their public offices, such as
providing food for elderly and needy residents, purchasing tickets to attend a myriad of civic and
community events in order to engage with City residents, and sending newsletters and
correspondence to the City's residents to keep them apprised of City business and news; and
WHEREAS, the stipend amounts for the Mayor and City Commissioners have not been
increased in thirteen (13) years, despite the rising cost of living, and the salaries for the Mayor and
City Commissioners have been set at the same amount in the City Charter for over fifty (50) years;
and
WHEREAS, due to the amount of the salaries provided to the Mayor and City Commissioners,
only a limited group of individuals can afford to dedicate the tremendous amount of time, and afford
the attendant expenditures, necessary to fulfill the duties of a member on the Miami Beach City
Commission; and
WHEREAS, an increase of$750 per month to the monthly stipend for the City Commissioners,
to help alleviate the financial implications of serving on the City Commission, would reflect CPI
increases since the stipend amount was last increased, and is reasonable given the time and financial
resources that are expended by the members of the City Commission in serving the public; and
WHEREAS, at its regular meeting on February 14, 2018, the Mayor and City Commission
considered this matter and voted in favor of a $750 per month increase to the $1,500 monthly stipend
for City Commissioners.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby authorize
a $750 per month increase to the stipend received by the City Commissioners, which increase shall
be paid from budgeted funds in the City's Fiscal Year 2017-18 Budget and shall be included in all
future City Budgets.
PASSED and ADOPTED this day of 018.
