1674-26 Arthur Godfrey ale AliaMi feral'
A Knight-Ridder Newspaper
Oct. 5, 1990
Dear Harvey,
My criticism of your criticism was in the context of your remarks
toward my Marcus Frank story. In regards to Arthur Godfrey, I never
have been in favor of the street being named for him.
I , too, have spent time talking with Hank Meyer about Godfrey and
the man swears to my face that Godfrey was not an anti-Semite.
Nevertheless, it is true that he stayed at a restricted hotel when
he was here. For that, I shall always be suspicious of him.
But, Harvey, if we are to be revisionists, what shall we do about
Washington Avenue, named after George Washington? He kept slaves !
Shall we also tear down the monument to Carl Fisher? He built four
restricted hotels in Miami Beach.
I don 't know where to start; you seem to have locked onto Godfrey.
None of this is a simple task. I wonder if more anti-Semitism would
be generated by prosecuting an anti-Godfrey campaign. I am sincere
when I say I do not know which way is the right way but I do know
that Godfrey wasn 't the only alleged racist who left his mark on the
community and got something named for him.
As for Lou Salome, he is alive and well (at last contact) in the
Middle East. Lou is Cox Newspapers ' Middle East Bureau Chief
(actually, he 's the entire bureau. )
His travels have taken him from Israel to Saudi Arabia to Iran to
Libya to Syria and everywhere else in the region. He also went to
the USSR to follow a Jewish family to Israel . He 's having a
wonderful time and manages to keep his head out of the line of fire.
Sincerely
Howard Kleinberg
